  • I dunno how that would be a trustworthy gauge. We talk here and i still don’t know the content of that video 😁

Sure, to each his own, but still…it’s lemmy, not reddit. And also this is a linux-post. I wonder how the efficiency of Linux goes with the inefficiency of videos with ads in it. But that’s just me, and I’m just annoyed by no client (that i know of) having such simple feature to just ignore video-posts, especially if it’s YouTube. Or just links to reddit or even nastier paywalls. Even if i might miss a good discussion or real information in the comments i would never see.

Though, Of course, you’re not wrong with all you said.

  • Oh no, don’t get me wrong. Of course Youtube isn’t evil/bad per se. It totally has a reason to exist. And of course youtubers make videos. And yes, i simply don’t consume YouTube unless i have to.

But, i am not on Youtube here. I am not here to grant someone a buck for a view. I don’t want advertisement. And i certainly don’t want videos. It personally pisses me off that i so often click on an interesting post here (lemmy in general) just to end up paywalled or in a damn video. That is all. I’d love a simple feature to opt out of posts that just advertise their youtube-video. If I’d want that, I’d go to, well, Youtube 😁

Not ranting about the existence of this video (it might be awesome, what do i know), but it’s just totally misplaced imho.

Like i wouldn’t want to browse YouTube to find videos of a picture or a text. Yeah sure it’s called “social MEDIA”, which includes all media. I’d just love to select what to consume.

  • Most has already been said, but i just want to add that it’s just a mixture of

    A) the problem itself is way more “ok” to talk about today than it was 20-50 years ago. More people have acknowledged that it actually IS a problem. Even though we (as a society) still have ways to go. E.g. In germany there is a statutory limit of 10 year on it. So someone who got abused at 1, has his/her last chance to get legal justice with 11.

    B) media has transformed from an informational source of events to a click-hungry sensationalism source. It sells better than good or other stories.

    C) we have way more media and sources of knowledge and information than back then. 30yrs ago if it didn’t make it into “the big news” you never heard of it.

On a side-note: Hey random Internet-stranger and survivor. I’m proud of you that you managed to get here (place and time). And i wish you, that you manage to find some peace.

  • The downvotes are unfair. There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

No, such things never go away. People can learn to to better deal with it, they can learn to cope better with the pain, they can learn skills to better handle anxiety/panic, they even can go through lenghty programs to learn to overall feel better.

But these traumas never go away, people can’t escape them. In the best case it is no around-the-clock hindrance anymore. The triggers stay, the nightmares stay. The memories stay.

Reading the mentioned article about ©PTSD might expand your view. Everyone should know, so we wouldn’t throw questions like this at survivors. As they all have, at least, PTSD. And often many illnesses more. Not only psychological.

  • … And? Does a system have to be adjusted to the lowest denominator?

If you use a thing, of which you have zero clues about, and still fuck around with it, you get what you ask for. People don’t understand the slightest thing about the internet and still use it to go to “free” streaming-sites and whatnot.

I don’t say rooting-per-default. But an easy option to do so. And also unlocking the bootloader. It’s ok if it’s hidden. And let it come with 5 security questions á la “u rly sure?”. If someone doesn’t know what he’s doing, and still does it, and screws up, so be it. Charge the dumbnut in support.

  • “you can’t uninstall a system-app” (while trying to get rid of all the bloatware like mcaffee)

“you cannot upgrade to win8, but you can factory-reset your win7”

“you can only factory-reset 3 times, please call <insert company>-support!”

“you don’t have access to this file”

"defender has removed this ‘malware’ and there’s nothing you can do about it’

“You can’t install linux on this machine, this machine came bundled with Win7Home”

    “you cannot install this program”

“you are not allowed to enter the bios”

“you cannot boot from this non-licensed device” (usb-stick)

    etc.

One of these would probably do it :-)
