Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are commonly used idioms/metaphors that make no sense to anyone who knows about the topic they come from?
71·7 months agoYeah no, the sling was considered a very very deadly weapon back then. That’s the thing. And that’s not what bible school would want to portray. But the sling as a weapon was pretty much the Magnum Revolver of those days.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are commonly used idioms/metaphors that make no sense to anyone who knows about the topic they come from?
92·7 months agoI don’t know about ancient duel rules to say whether bringing a sling was permitted. The take is more along the lines of “David wasn’t an underdog. If anything, David was the clear favourite to win because of his weapon”. Because a sling at the time was a highly effective and deadly weapon which was still regularly used for centuries after the supposed events of that biblical story because of its effectiveness.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are the most unhinged cartoons in your expert opinion?
2·7 months agoNot a cartoon, but number 1 most unhinged kids’ show has to be Boohbah. Everyone involved in the making of this show has to have been on drugs constantly, that’s the only explanation I can think of for why this show exists.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something you learned in your line of work that other people wouldn't know
12·8 months agoYouth worker here: How much fucking work it is to just keep things from falling apart constantly. People assume most of my work is planning and doing activities with teenagers. But a lot of the time I’m like 50% caretaker.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Non-americans, in what ways is your country better than america?
21·9 months agoIf you’re from Germany or Italy: I don’t think this is really true anymore. The fascist parties in these countries got 30%/21% of votes.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Every living human is now replaced by a clone of you. How would you imagine the world to be like?
1·9 months agoA lot of deaths because of accidents and because nobody knows how to do medicine, but not a single more death because of war. And after 2-3 years of learning how to do most tasks with okay proficiency, I see a much fairer distribution of resources (food, shelter, etc.) which means less starvation deaths etc.
Also, anarchism overnight.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you put into words what gender means to you apart from societal gender roles and expectations?
3·2 years agoYou said:
Sometimes the software does not reflect the hardware.
If gender is the software and the body is the hardware, this is kind of the “born in the wrong body”-stuff many people still use and it implies that there is a kind of hardware/software combination that fits together and a kind of combination that does not.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you put into words what gender means to you apart from societal gender roles and expectations?
62·2 years agoCould be because I reported it for being discriminating towards non-binary people because you negated their existence.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you put into words what gender means to you apart from societal gender roles and expectations?
6·2 years agoAnd it breaks my heart every time I hear yet another story of someone killing their own passion, numbing themselves down to the point that they become unable to enjoy what they formerly loved, just to “fit in” a society that doesn’t accept deviation from the perceived norm.
Yeah I feel like that was an issue for me as well and one of the reasons I either repressed or resented parts of myself for a long time. And I’m glad the journeys I had the last couple of years (the one I described in the post and also the journey of overcoming depression) not only helped me accept those parts of myself, but be happy and proud that I have them.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you put into words what gender means to you apart from societal gender roles and expectations?
6·2 years agoNah, I don’t subscribe to that analogy because it still implies that there are “male” bodies and “female” bodies when I think every woman’s body is by definition a female body and every man’s body is by definition a male body.
