TL;DR: you pay $250 to let someone else install a custom ROM on the pixel tablet
$250??? Damn. GrapheneOS is so easy to install it’s hard to even mess up. And free too.
GrapheneOS
Also, any other applicable custom ROM.
I know this is a Pixel device and Graphene develops exclusively to those, but it’s getting really tiresome to see any mention of custom ROMs followed up with “bUt gRaPhEnE…!” like it’s the only option.
Edit: I’ll take Graphene over /e/OS any day, though (provided I find a Pixel at a reasonable price).
Graphene was just one to name a bunch. But especially GrapheneOS has a very nice and easy install progress. Graphene is very stock android so to say, which isn’t very liked among many. I don’t even really like it myself - it lacks a lot of customisation. But security wise, you’re in control.
Apologies if my criticism was misdirected at your comment — and thanks for elaborating 🤝
My general point stands that people seem to hype up Graphene unduly, to the disadvantage of other ROM development projects (I use LineageOS for microG BTW 😄).
Completely agreed, there are die hard fans in the Graphene community that recommend nothing else than Graphene. Though, most of them just take security serious whereas others may just be looking for cool features and such, aha. One thing I loved on my OnePlus 7 Pro with crDroid was the amount of actual good and useful features it had. Things like: hold power bottom to turn on flashlight when screen is off, just made things so much easier. Now - on the Pixel 9 Pro XL I have to turn on my phone, swipe down, press flashlight and fail to do so 2 times. But - security. Everybody their own opinions, aha.
Thanks to you too for the kind reply!
It’s not the only option, just the best option.
I’d maybe pay to have all IR junk and screen side camera removed. I’d definitely feel it adds value if they would clamp the speaker and mic to the audible range with a hardware filter. Give me a hardware switch to remove modem power and I’d be happy.
