Degoogle + BuyFromEU + Privacy: I’d like to share about my smartphone apps replacement journey:

WhatsApp -> Olvid

Gmail -> Mailo

Reddit -> Lemmy

Play store -> Aurora store (no account needed)

Google (browser and search engine) -> Qwant

Google maps -> Here Wego

Gboard -> Heliboard

All trails -> Komoot

ChatGPT -> LeChat

Any recommendation to replace the following?

  • Google Drive,
  • Google photo,
  • Apple wallet (I’d like an alternative to pay with my phone)

    I agree that tech sovereignty is desirable so that we can’t get blackmailed like Ukraine. I’ve switched almost all my software.

    Perhaps obvious to everyone but it didn’t dawn on me until today add those ratings and reviews to your new apps in the app or play stores to give them a boost in visibility and ranking for people who are less nerdy and less aware.

    Olvid

    That looks very closed-source, even though it’s French. How did you decide to pick that?

      I don’t understand it either. Buying european is important, but we should stop recommending weird unknown messaging apps. Signal, although US made, had multiple audits, is open source, vetted and secure. Just because a product is from europe we shouldn’t recommend it. Especially if it gives a false sense of security and privacy.

        Olvid has been proven secure, used by French president, governement members and many company executives.
