Xiaomi has now provided a deeper dive into one of its new flagship smartphone's least predictable upgrades: a new form of protection for its premium 2K display. Dragon Crystal Glass has been made in-house by the OEM, rated for up to 10 times the drop-resistance of rivals such as Huawei's Kunlun Glass or Corning's top-end Gorilla Glass Victus.
From a material science point of view, it’s amazing how we can use advanced materials to make glass hard but not brittle.
I’m curious; how many people still use screen protectors? I do, because I’m often in the position of selling my device to get some value out of it before upgrading. I’m often doing app development tasks, so the money is worth it to me.
Gorilla Glass owns the market on smartphone glass, so it’s good to see more in-house development of the technology.
I don’t, because Gorilla Glass has held up pretty well for me, in the past 8+ years of not using a protector. I never go to the beach and I don’t live in a dusty place either, so I don’t have to worry about sand. I also never keep anything else in the same pocket as my phone. I too sell my old devices btw, and I’ve never had an issue with scratches. I do however use a case, and I make sure to get one which has a raised lip that can protect the screen in the event of a fall.
