  • Of course not. I’m in love with a whole person, not her appearance. I love her fierce intellect, her passion for justice, her wanderer’s spirit. I love that we can sit together and watch anything only for it to lead to a new and endlessly fascinating discussion.

Makeup doesn’t affect any of that.

I like how makeup highlights her favorite features or hides when she feels tired or insecure. I like that it helps her feel more fully herself. I think it’s great that makeup can do that for her.

She will always be attractive to me for who she is. How she looked may have helped me first talk to her, but who she is has kept us talking for 16 years.

  • Do you mean politics as in the details of elections and minutia of governance?

Or do you mean the discussion for how we ought to live together?

The answer is not really to both.

I do try to avoid authoritarian idiots spouting fruitless nonsense, but they seem to be a tragedy of the commons for public discourse.

  • It has its moments. The opportunity to figure out a tough problem or create an innovative solution can be very rewarding.

What busy work there is I can work at my own pace, so long as I meet deadlines.

I work from home, have a fair amount of autonomy and responsibility and have no one looking over my shoulder.

    I recognize I’m very fortunate.

  • It’s very much a factor of right place and right time.

For their mental health, the astronauts are required to have calls with people down here. Tracy is an acquaintance of someone my wife knows, so when the call was set up, we made the invite list.

We have no personal connection, we just managed to sit in the room while others talked. Tracy did put out an offer to come visit her at Johnson when she’s back, so you better believe we’ll follow up on that.

  • I literally got to be a part of a group that got to chat with astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson on the ISS yesterday afternoon. It was a really cool, candid, behind the scenes experience as she did a little mini-tour through the space station.

The craziest part for me was when she took her phone to the observatory and we watched the sun vanish behind the horizon of the earth. It happened so quickly and so brilliantly that it took my breath away and nearly brought me to tears. It was spectacular.

It was almost two hours with lengthy breaks as we lost contact a few times. But what an amazing experience.

  • It’s a gas station chain in Texas called Buc-ee’s. Some Texans freak out about it in a huge way. I have lots of Buc-ee branded apparel as a result of my brother-in-laws passion, which he’s instilled in my niece who now insists on more shirts for her aunt and uncle.

I’m cool with it as they pay everyone well above minimum wage. If you want to fan out over a corporation, you could do much worse.
