Because of inflation and such, but the important aspect of them is being super rich compared to everyone else (hence we don’t count people that have a billion of some much less valuable currency), and that’s a very old problem.

Billionaires aren’t new. I also don’t really think LLMs will be as impactful as they get hyped or feared to be, and actually think AI as a whole outside mere chatbots will be positive if not the revolution it gets hyped as.

Honestly I do think there has been an improvement. It might not seem like that when viewing the past, but the past is easy to overestimate- we don’t have to live it anymore.

As to civil rights, it should be pointed out that while recent years have seen regression in the US, its not always a regression to the point that things were at back then, and more importantly, the rest of the world does not necessarily share the political woes of the US.

tbh just with how the fediverse works I would not trust vote counts here whatsoever. The downside of having no central authority over the network is that anything that lets one instance affect the whole network, like votes from bots on one instance being federated, cant be entirely trusted.

Honestly, I don’t think very many of them could really be described as such, as at the very least most hobbies either don’t have a person or group that could be called it’s leader, or if they do, it’s generally some business that owns some relevant IP that very much isn’t considered unquestionable and above criticism. You could get cults that emerge within some hobby group instead of taking up the whole subculture, but given even things as mundane as exercise groups have had this happen before, I’d guess that can technically happen in just about any of them.

Guam wouldn’t even be leaving the US, unless you expect it to secede sometime in the immediate future and be successful at doing so. For that matter, if the question is “what would your dream place to immigrate be” rather than “what place do you think you would have a decent shot of being welcomed”, why should people not mention popular places? If people didn’t find them appealing, they wouldn’t be popular in the first place.

The Netherlands probably, but with the massive grain of salt that I suspect that choosing a “ideal place to live” without actually having been to that place is likely to result in a skewed idea of what a place is truly like, and as I’ve never been outside the United States I have that issue when thinking about any other country. I also doubt they or anywhere else that might make my list of ideal places would want me, seeing as I’m just some random factory worker without any especially rare skill.

With the caveat that this was about a month before I quit, so I can’t say for sure that the kid didn’t eventually get fired, just that if he did it took longer than that: I was working in a grocery store on a closing shift, and one of the high school kids that worked there after school brings in one of those “illegal” (I think they’re only illegal to sell and not to own or something like that, but you can get them on Amazon easily anyway) extra bright green laser pointers, and starts randomly waving the thing around, to include right next to my face as I was stocking shelves and around corners a customer could walk around without warning.

Only time I’ve ever had to make a complaint about someone to my supervisor, I’m not someone to complain about people easily but to my understanding you can blind people with those things. I even mentioned that to the kid and he just laughed and told me “duh that’s the point”.

All I heard about the complaint later was “Oh yeah he’s been told not to bring it in again”. This was right in the middle of that point around COVID where it was hard to find retail workers and you got all those memes of “nobody wants to work anymore”, so my suspicion is they might have just been worried about replacing him.

About a week later, he also waited till the supervisor was away from the front of store for awhile and connected his phone to this tv display that normally was for the in-store bank displaying ads, to make it play ytp videos at high volume (or whatever the modern term for that kind of thing is, I’m not sure if they’re still called that).

I’ve been pretty happy with how the instance I use has been run thus far, but it is focused around furries, so it won’t be something most people outside that subculture like I expect. Still, the fandom is big enough that someone in it looking for an instance might look at this thread, so I mention it anyway.

The eggs have gone back to 5 bucks a dozen where I’m at, at least in the store I was last in. Still haven’t bothered getting any recently, but they’re not at like, 8 or 9 like they were at the same store a month or two ago. Not sure if that’s a change in the bird flu situation or if they’ve just been pushed down with some kind of subsidy or something.

Rich people would try to develop a technique to identify and transfer their wealth to their next life. If no way exists to identify people apart from memory, you would probably get a lot of people claiming to be the same wealthy dead person.

Things also might get ugly if people or states try to punish the reincarnations of people for whom death or a life sentence wasn’t determined to be “enough” (though on the other hand, I suppose murder would be less heinous a crime since the victim just comes back and isn’t gone), or if people seek out the reincarnations of dead spouses, since those reincarnated people would now be babies.

On the brighter side, if those past memories are good enough, education becomes a lot more effective since it doesn’t just teach the current person but all their future incarnations until the subject matter gets forgotten or out of date.

literally the thing that made me decide to finally look into linux, recently resulting in my switching to it, is that for years Ive liked to have the taskbar on the right side on autohide, and on windows 11 they took away the ability to put it there.

I renamed my cat because of this guy. I don’t really like to change animals names from what it was at the shelter in case they’re used to it, and I have a cat named Mel, who I suspect was named for him because there was another nearby cat in the shelter he came from named “Gibson”.

So I’ve renamed him after Mel Brooks.

Theyve looked a bit daunting to set up, so not just yet. But isnt that effectively the same thing, still running windows for those programs just without having to actually sign out of the linux partition to do it?

I have some software that doesnt work with wine or anything else the like Ive tried, and doesnt seem to have a linux equivalent that I can find. Ive only been using linux a few months now, so maybe theres some other options that Im missing, but how else does one deal with that apart from booting back into the old windows install whenever I need that specific software?
