haven’t join any other instance besides lemmyworld
Not even @Don_Dickle@lemmy.ml ~30 days ago (banned 22 days ago)?
The Piped bot is checking comments for instances of a YouTube domain and video id (I don’t know specifically what it triggers on) and then replies with a link to that video id as a Piped-based one. But what it should also do is check if the initial comment also contains the Piped URL it’s about to post and then not reply with a duplicate of that same address.
For example I’d post something like
And the bot would reply offering the exact “Piped mirror” address I had already linked to. This would happen regardless of if I used custom link text or just left it as a raw URL so the bot clearly wasn’t doing a check of either method.
Awesome, glad I was able to help!
That bot has long been a thorn in my side, both due to that Lemmy bug but relatedly because I used to include Piped links with all my YT ones but the bot doesn’t(/didn’t?) check for them before replying anyway. I’ve never created a bot but I can’t imagine it’s more than like a single line to do a regex search for the exact link it intends to post and aborting if it’s found.
I would get that when I had bots disabled in settings and one would reply to me (usually the Piped link bot). After manually adding that specific bot to the block list that stopped happening.
If they used the native instance blocking feature to “completely block” the instance that actually only hides posts from that instance.
Users can now block instances. Similar to community blocks, it means that any posts from communities which are hosted on that instance are hidden. However the block doesn’t affect users from the blocked instance, their posts and comments can still be seen normally in other communities.
Sounds like “hazing.”
This wasn’t an innocent request for interesting topics to follow, it was taking the stance that only serious topics get discussed here and it’s boring:
I’d like to see the fedi let its hair down a bit. It’s okay to talk about stuff other than infosec, privacy guides, distros, and Gaza.
It wasn’t a demand, but certainly requesting that we “let our hair down a bit” and that they “often get bored of the Fediverse.”
This post could have been phrased as “What are some good non-political or news related communities?” And I’ll gladly accept the label of being elitist if it’s because I have minimal expectations that people explore for solutions before complaining and implying it’s everyone else that needs to change. You can’t browse all without easily bumping into the things I listed, and if you aren’t aware there’s different filtering options there’s always a sidebar link instructing you how the platform works.
Do animals count as actors? Turner & Hooch could be interesting with Tom Hanks drooling and running on all fours and Beasley The Dog playing a detective.
I’m not the one complaining about being bored and requesting that everyone else amuse me. All those things I listed are things that are regularly posted so what’s the issue?
Yeah, where’s the fun? There’s no posts about owls/bats/invertebrates/cats/dogs, no cooking or food posts, no pictures of people knitting socks, nobody asking general questions, no articles and pictures about space, no discussion around movies/tv/books, nobody ever posts about gaming of any kind, there’s no memes to be found anywhere, no poems or short stories, no digital/traditional/AI art.
For some reason browsing news/politics/technology always seems to revolve around depressing and infuriating topics which is different from every other platform.
That’s colloquially referred to as retail therapy. I don’t think occasionally indulging in it is bad as long as you’re cognizant of its purpose as a coping mechanism and understand the relief/pleasure it provides probably isn’t going to be long-lasting.
In my family, all impulse purchases had to be “justified” with whatever flimsy reasoning was necessary. I don’t think that’s any better and if it’s not coming at the expense of things you actually need, it’s good to be able to decide you want something just because you do. Otherwise you can start going down the path of, “Do I really need cheese on this burger? Do I really need variety in my food? Do I really need to be eating three times a day?”
Life should be lived, just don’t lose sight of the big picture of course. Also, I’m sure other people around you approve of your buying deodorant :)

I remember people arguing about the flavor and the rumor was that it was made from varying mixes of leftover (or line switching) soda so each batch was always a little different.
EDIT: I have no idea what that phone number connects to now, probably don’t call it!
IMO, combos shouldn’t be more than 20% cheaper than ordering items a la carte. Like, it shouldn’t be legal to price things that way. It’s just ridiculous that you get ripped off unless you order like, 500 more calories worth of food than you should really be eating in a single meal.
Around July last year my local Taco Bell was selling the Chalupa Cravings Box for $5, purchasing the items separately was $12.47 before tax.
- Chalupa Supreme - $4.79
- Beefy 5-Layer Burrito - $3.99
- Crunchy Taco - $1.69
- Cinnamon Twists - $1.00
- Medium drink - $1.00
And right now I can order a Cheesy Bean & Rice burrito:
- Beans
- Seasoned Rice
- Creamy jalapeno sauce
- Nacho cheese sauce
=420 calories, $1.49
But a Bean burrito:
- Beans
- Cheese
- Onions
- Red sauce
=360 calories, $2.19
But you can add the onions and red sauce to any menu item for free…why the $.70 difference? Adding seasoned rice is $.30, nacho cheese sauce is $.69, creamy jalapeno sauce is $.19 – I really don’t understand how they arrive at the prices for their menu items at all.
I don’t have anything meaningful to add but just wanted to chime in that I noticed the same thing and ultimately just blocked the community. I thought about making a post but assumed it would lead into a big argument over acceptable behavior and not starting witch hunts and decided against it. I’ve also largely given up on clear or direct dialogue between mods/admins or responses to technical issues. I’m sure that doesn’t apply universally amongst the different instances but at least for .ee and .world my experiences haven’t really been productive - so I’m just going to lurk and assume everything is operating as wanted and intended. It’s too frustrating to otherwise assume that help is wanted but just not accepted.
