I luckily don’t have any major incidents but a couple stick out in my memory.

First time I realized an encounter was racist was my first time at a summer camp in the US around age 12.

I went with a friend to line up for the showers in the morning and it was just us two and another kid. I barely noticed he was there cause I was caught up in conversation. Not long later some other kids walk in and the waiting kid just blurts out in relief “Thank god, I was the only white guy here!” And even in my innocent, privileged little 12 year old brain I knew that was kind of fucked up.

Also had a South African girl break up with me as a teen cause her parents literally cited my nationality as an issue… While they were living in my country…

I mean, if we go back to the original Haitian term, they’d act like slaves who’ve been drugged up and/or made to really believe that they are “trapped” in their own bodies, mindlessly following orders. Pop-culture zombies though, I suppose they’d move as much and as well as they could before their muscles and bones can’t physically keep up with whatever is compelling them to move.

I’ve been using this a few months and recommend it as well. It’s serviceable but feels a bit janky. Scrolling and switching between view styles tends to leave black boxes on my device, and the UI doesn’t always disappear while scrolling. But I’d still recommend it for how light and fast it is on top of being FOSS

You’ve described my perfect smart watch. I hate the rush for features and better brighter touch screens when all I want is a non intrusive notification device that won’t accidentally call my boss fat when my wrist grazes any other part of my skin.

The Pebble was too good and spoiled my opinion of every smart watch I’ve used since.

I mean, if privacy is really your concern you really shouldn’t use UK servers at all or any other country that’s part of the Five Eyes (or other such alliances https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes).

Also, people use VPNs for different reasons, like not wanting your workplace to know your browsing Lemmy during office hours. This is such a strangely confrontational post considering people seem to just be trying to help OP troubleshoot their problem.

On the original point, I can’t seem to access APKPure either, VPN connected to Singapore. Might try other connections when I’m not at work.

That’s exactly where I feel I’m at. I’m no tech expert but I’m the guy family calls to help with computer stuff and I know enough to realize I don’t like the direction Windows is going. I’ve gone as far as to install Linux on a single device I use but now I just use that device less cause I can’t be bothered to figure it out when I’ve already got other machines that I’ve got working just the way I like.

Feel like I’ve come to a wall that yeah, I could overcome and climb, but this side of the wall is still livable and I’m not even sure the other side will be much better.

Some phones still have em, most Xiaomi phones do but then you gotta put up with their software or be comfortable flashing a custom ROM.

I love having an IR blaster in my phone mostly cause my work doesn’t trust us with air conditioning remotes but also I never have to stress about finding the right remote for everything since I’ve got anything I might interact with daily that uses an IR remote programmed into my phone.

So me seeing ads in random languages is not me being clever with identity obfuscation, but big data being big stupid?

I’m gonna chime in with some of the others and say Onyx is actually really good. I got my Nova 3 (black and white, not color) to replace an old Kindle and I’ve been loving it. The fact that I can write notes on it has been a game changer for me and has completely replaced pen and paper notes. On top of that, the fact that it’s Android means I can install other apps and that just opened all kinds of windows for experimenting with the device that I didn’t expect, it really is just basically a tablet with a much more readable screen. And second best thing to notes I’ve found about my Nova is how nice reading manga is on it, I’m even paying for a subscription to Shonen Jump now plus using Tachiyomi for fan-scans.

Only damage the thing has taken in the time I’ve had it is a couple corners coming off the case, which I just glued back on. Device itself feels good as ever.

Legit, I was looking into getting a light gun working with my gaming setup recently cause that was my favorite thing to do at arcades.

I know for some people it’s super relaxing. I tried playing the free tetris on the official website recently, was into it until it started getting fast. I am not much of a quick reflex gamer

FTL is a great chill out game for me. The only problem is I’ve put in so many hours that I’ve practically seen everything! I looked into some interesting mods but just haven’t tried them out yet. When I think about it, FTL shouldn’t be that chill, but there’s a certain simplicity in the gameplay, and the ability to pause all the time, even during combat, gives me the ability to take my time thinking through what I’m gonna do.

Underrated chill out game, agreed, maybe I’ll finally get around to trying some mods.

The more I hear about No Man’s Sky now the more I’m thinking that perhaps this will be one of the games I can chill out to. I generally love space games, and the idea of just kinda flying around doing random stuff is already appealing.

I played this a bit on mobile and really enjoyed it, not sure why I stopped in retrospect, I was never able to beat it even once. Another one where dying isn’t a big deal cause replaying is part of the fun. Been thinking of checking it out on PC but just never got around to it

It’s on sale on Steam in my region, I’ve heard a lot of good things before so gonna check it out!

I tried Minecraft way back, so maybe it’s changed, but I don’t do to well in setting my own goals in a game. I liked Subnautica because there was an interesting story element and mystery that kept you engaged as you moved towards your goal of getting off planet. In the process of reaching the goal, yeah, I wanna make my base look nice, wanna build some cool things, but my overall actions were still being compelled by the storytelling and world-building of the game. I don’t see those elements in Minecraft but again, it’s been a long time since I played.

I’m reminded that I used to do exactly this in Ocarina of Time back when I was a kid. Maybe it’s time to relive those days.
