  • All of the OP’s points could be said about church sermons as well, and yet there’s still thousands of church gatherings every week.

So I think your point hits the nail on the head. People don’t go to these large gatherings because they’re looking for a presentation of convincing arguments, books and recordings are better for that. They go to experience the sense that they are part of something bigger than themselves. They want to feel like they are contributing to something important, and a large crowd all in unison makes them feel that way. Rallies aren’t meant to change minds, they’re meant to get the base excited to donate/ volunteer/ talk to anyone who will listen.

  • For example, I used to use generic eye drops. Then there were a bunch of recalls on eye drops made in India because they weren’t kept sterile and people were getting eye infections. So now I make sure to only buy eye drops that are manufactured in countries with actual controls on health codes. It turns out that imposing that restriction elliminated all the generic options. I’m certainly not happy to be paying double for brand name pataday, but I don’t care to mess with the chance of eye infections.

  • The bad flooding is because of how steep those areas are. Down in Florida, water takes a while to make its way into the creeks, streams, and rivers. The areas with the most extreme flooding is because entire mountainsides worth of rainfall drains in the span of a couple days.

Eastern TN and western NC also had a ton of rainfall from thunderstorms just before Helene so the ground was already saturated. For reference check out this rain gauge in Asheville.

    https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/353312082355545/#parameterCode=00045&period=P7D&showMedian=false

The rain from Helene didn’t really get to Western NC until the early hours of Friday the 27th. That gauge was already at 10 inches by that time. So really the storm before Helene brought more rain than Helene did. Either the thunderstorm or Helene alone would have been moderate, but manageable flash floods, but the two back to back was insane.

  • I’ve seen at least a couple different users with that, but I wouldn’t be able to recall their usernames offhand.

The notice really reminds me of the Facebook chain posts where people would post a declaration saying that facebook couldn’t use your data/likeness if you share the post text.

If ai companies are unabashed about scraping and training on copywrited material from litigious companies like the nyt, I really don’t get how anyone convinces themselves that anything they append to their comments would stop a scraper.

  • I see cashiers at aldi open and close lanes after just a little bit all the time. Aldi workers don’t just work the register, they manage stock and cleaning as well. So at my aldi there’s usually one person on a register but they frequently radio for someone else to come when the line starts to back up. The second person was presumably in the middle of another task, and they don’t stick around at all when the backup is cleared. That sometimes means throwing the closed sign on the belt even if someone is approaching the lane.

I personally wouldn’t ascribe motive to the cashiers actions, but I wasn’t there and don’t really have any context.

  • I use lactose free whole milk, maple syrup, a generous amount of cocoa, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sometimes a touch of nutmeg.

My wife likes to go really heavy on the cinnamon and adds some cayenne pepper for more of a mexican chocolate style drink.

    Delicuous indeed.

Cocoa does contain some caffeine, so people with no tolerance at all might not be able to enjoy it, but it’s something like 10% the amount that’s in coffee.
