Probably not much for people on a self hosting community, but those that want to get away from subscriptions and steal your data as a service cloud providers that might need some reassurance that they’ll have a working system.

Nixos is an os that’s defined by its config stored in .nix files. Everything is defined here all the software and configurations. Two people with the same script will have the exact same os.
Any changes you make that aren’t in the scripts won’t be present when you reboot.
You could maintain a very custom linux distribution (kinda) by just maintaining these config scripts.
So a user wouldn’t need to install all required software and dependencies. They could get a nixos and the self-host config and adjust some settings and have a working system straight after install.
Gnome is spelt the way they want it to be said. Are you suggesting that gnome should be pronounced ‘nome’ like the garden ornament with a silent g.
LaTeX writes the same fonts better, at least compared to MS Office. I notice it when a papers been written in word with the Journal template with the same fonts and style. LaTeX kerns and splits new lines nicer.
The non web app is probably just a web app and browser wrapped in one.
Rather than make better processors they just make them dispate heat better.
These are also googles ‘own design processors’, so bad Samsung even avoids useing exynos. Next gen pixels will definitely be the hottest phone around.
This stops users from installing malicious software. You are still able to install the software, even though it isn’t recognised. You just need to right click, rather than double click.
Yes, I understood that. There are specific OS for Kodi like libreElec, that make it easy to have support for lots of codecs etc. I don’t know if any for specific to Jellyfin, but the Jellyfin App has a better UX than Kodi.
Kodi is a great Linux client. But that’s not what OP wants, the jellyfin app is a nicer UX experience.
Multiple standards are good, initially. Multiple visions and approaches can get tested. The best hopefully displaced the rest, whilst picking up all the other good ideas.
If there was only one standard we would get stuck with snaps with no alternatives.
The big advantage of those three is you have it pre-installed. Pre-installed with forced defaults in very powerful.
I see people using edge, never realising that they’re using edge. Asking to install very expensive office 365 suites for very simple documents and power points. Word can’t even display text properly, most people don’t notice because they don’t know any different.
Linux needs a better Ubuntu. One all the Linux users can easily recommend. That manufacturers can be confident shipping on laptops.
Once that hurdle is cleared. The user has Linux pre-installed, the manufacturer provides all the necessary drivers. Linux is often easier to resolve issues with. The settings are clearer and better laid out, dependencies are better and easier to manage than windows. Solutions are easier to find and implement, they also don’t change unexpectedly.
It’s a nice aesthetic choice in macos. They got rid of the icons, I always thought the order was clear. It’s like a car clutch closes the engine from the wheels, brake slows the car (minimise) and accelerator maximises.
You can change them to grey circles.
Windows is just shit piled on top of shit and sold as something new. It’s so bloated so they can maintain backwards compatibility. So original code is definitely in Windows 11.
There is lots of web based guis. These are accessed on a separate device on the same network (or internet). These use very little resources, all the rendering is done on the client web browser.
Same account different servers would mimic discord. So you have one app, but the communities or ‘discord server’ can be their own instance. If it’s mimicking discord it will keep all the message boards private to users like discord, but it could still benefit from Lemmy/Mastodon integration. Many communities have a discord and a sub Reddit having the same account on both may be valuable to some people.
I don’t know the state of voice and video calls in the fediverse, it seems to be the main benefit of discord. Otherwise discord is just a terrible closed version of forums/subreddit/communities.
A big part of it is also letting other people know you did it. China and Russia are big on this. The create dangerous situations, then say they aren’t responsible all while sowing confusion. The want plausible deniability, confusion and credit for doing it.
Could be Chinese creating reasonable doubt. Making this sort of mistake makes explanations that this wasn’t Chinese sound plausible. Even if evidence other than the name comes out, this rebuttal can be repeated and create confusion amongst the public, reasonable suspicions against accusers and a plausible excuse for other states to not blame China (even if they believe it was China).
Confusion and multiple narratives is a technique carried out often by Soviet, Russian and Chinese government. We are unlikely to be able to answer the question ourselves. It will be up to the intelligence agencies to do that.
If someone wanted to blame China for this, they would take the name of a real Chinese person to do it. There is over a billion real people they could take a name from. It unlikely that a person creating a name for someone for this type of espionage would make a mistake like picking an implausible name accidentally.
This is Google’s end game messaging app. They want to replace text messaging and Google hangouts/allo/chat… were never going to cut it.
Its a chat app that doesn’t look like one. It looks like the default sms app, you don’t need anyone to download or make an account for it. There biggest hurdle was getting iOS users. They’ve now pressed apple into supporting it as well. They even have Apple state Google will help with their installation. We know Google pay apple billions every year to keep Google search the default on iOS, it even binds Apple to publicly and in court support the arrangements. I wouldn’t be surprised if Google has paid billions just for RCS on iPhone. It will keep their marketing monopoly in place for a long time.
Fuck the people that pick and choose the words they get upset about. People happily useing the n-word and then getting insulted 10mins later when the r-word is mentioned are the worst.
