    Really neat post, I’d not heard of a few of these (never knew libre office draw could edit pdfs!).

    Couple of extra ones:

    Note taking and pdf annotation: Xournal++ is amazing, it’s also great to use on larger whiteboard screens. Plug and play support for scribe tablets on both windows and Linux.

    Emulation (up to ps1): Mednafen is lightweight and comes with a gui. It also supports recording, though not netplay.

    Ebook management/reading: Calibre - allows easy importing and exporting of ebooks to devices, also has a great built in search letting you find DRM free versions of a book.

    1. Employment - you currently have 0 social encumbrance. It’s a good time to job hop and move around, you meet a lot of people and learn a lot of social cues. Also better job gives more money for gaming.

    2. Stop looking; the dating world post 30 is absolutely horrific, and it will destroy your mental health. The people in there are not all that bad, but the online dating scene brings out the worst in everyone. Time to explore the wilds and visit local cafes (worst comes to worst, you get good tea/coffee).

    3. The type of people you meet varies with the type of game you play. If it has “more tits than a birdwatcher’s photobook”, you’re not going to meet many women. If it’s a wholesome online farming sim that ratio changes, but it’s still rough as a guy. Games are great for meeting people, but not for meeting lovers.

    4. At the end of the day, when the loneliness bites hard, don’t be afraid to call a hotline for help.

    5. Ok, ready for the big one? Stop looking for a partner and start looking for friends - the kind of people you can sit in a cafe with, or complain about work with. Guys, girls or those in between; doesn’t matter. The thing that helped me most was making a few good friends who I still travel over a hundred miles to meet monthly, and who I game with weekly online.

    To be entirely unbiased here, this covers user friendly distros that pretty much blow windows away for “default experience”.

    Windows has adware and scareware - more so it has config-cluster-fuckification (I believe this is the academic term for it?). This is where windows lost me - when it started bundling basic config options together to force you to relinquish your privacy. Now it’s “edit the registry or gtfo”…

    My students never read something they don’t need to know immediately - and those are the good ones. The bad ones expect someone else to have read it!

    I think there is a basic misunderstanding of human nature here: the manual needs to just have numbers to call when things go wrong! Part of being an adult is realising that everything is just damage control _

    Poor Mauro: they weren’t good at what they loved, they blamed others for their failings, and their community leader was nuts.

    Jokes aside, we’ve already got toxic right there. Linus isn’t right, but someone like that would be fired with good cause. It’s one thing to make a mistake, it’s quite another to blame your co-workers for your own shoddy work.

    You can hate the actions of something without hating the entity itself.

    Gmail is ok for engaging with the commercial world, but it’s not great for emails between researchers as there is a privacy concern. Google search us great if you want to buy something or find a shop nearby, but not so great if you want I formation on repairing something.

    Google’s current actions (trying to normalise as viewing, and the internet as a premium service) are both things I do hate though. I think whatever part of Google thought that up as a viable direction needs to have EVERY aspect of their lives content-bombed by Raid Shadow Legends ads (a company so predatory that gambling industry slot designers use them for inspiration).
