Europe loves to shit on US. Find another country or continent that Europe contrasts themselves from more than US. Popular contrasts:

    • Gun safety
    • Medical expenses
    • Educational expenses
    • Workers rights
    • Length of history
    • Mass transit
    • Police brutality

I can’t go a day on Lemmy without seeing at least one of the above. Yet, you don’t see daily comments on how Europe is better than Brazil, India, Japan, Australia, Canada, Egypt, South Africa, Mexico, etc. Can you imagine if they did that?

News: Man Freezes to Death in Rural Canada

    • EU resident: That never happens here because we have have mandatory heater laws or some shit.

News: 5 People Gunned Down and Robbed in Sao Paulo Favela

    • EU resident: No idea what that’s like to live in that fear since we don’t have large pockets of extreme poverty and guns are highly controlled here.

News: Mumbai Police Assault Orphaned Girl

    • EU resident: I’ve never heard of such a thing. Our police are here to protect us and orphanages are considered sacred.

News: Almost 90% of Egyptians Have Electric Power

    • EU resident: What a shame that Egypt isn’t a developed country.

News: Shoot Out between Rival Cartels Kills 13 Adults, 3 Children

    • EU Resident: That’s why we don’t share a border with the US or genocided the indigenous inhabitants here.

If 9/11 happened tomorrow, you’d see comments like, “What a tragedy. I’m happy I feel safe in Europe because we aren’t building bases in the Middle East. The worst thing I have to worry about is if people in Dubai think I’m American when I’m on vacation there.”

We get it. You guys are superior. The US has considerable social problems despite its GDP. You’d think you would be a little more grateful about the US helping yall build those fantastic social programs after you guys fucked yourselves up in WWII. Or US subsidizing your military defense, from aircraft carriers, troops, foreign bases, military equipment production, space, to being a nuclear sponge. Y’all be shitting your pants in the Summer and the freezing your asses of in the Winter with Putin if it wasn’t for us.

  • The percentage of linux users is also great.

Yes! I don’t feel like a weirdo here for using Linux exclusively on my computers. It’s nice to interact with a community that shares the values which lead each of us to use Linux. But even within that, the users here are not only respectful, but celebrate novice users that use distros like Mint. In my experience, some Linux users can be rude by presenting a sense of superiority for using distros that take lots of technical expertise. Not only does that not seem to be the case on Lemmy, but it’s actually made fun of (I use Arch, btw 😉).

  • What are things? What is energy? What is my soul? Where did it come from? Is it even in this spacetime, or is the body an avatar and I’m connecting into to it via some process? How was my soul created? Why do I experience rather than my body function solely as a biochemical robot? Where does my soul go when my body dies? Is there an end to eternity? If so, what happens or doesn’t happen? If not, how does change continue? What does my soul do until then? I understand life. I don’t understand experience.

One time I heard an assumption that every single electron is the same electron in different places and times. I asked a physicist what they thought of that idea. He thought for a moment and responded, “Would it even matter?” Sometimes I imagine that we are all the same person in different bodies living different lives. Every normal person, every genius, philanthropist, every monster, every slave, every billionaire, every dead fetus, every person I’ve dated, my parents,…we’re all the same person living in a different body going through every single experience of life. When I do that, everything seems so simple.

So would it even matter? Yes, because what if individuality is false? What if we’re all one thing, but the current structure of life doesn’t allow us to experience it as such so we incorrectly think that each individual medium of perception is completely independent? Giving everything to others would be selfish. Working as a team for the benefit of everyone would be the ultimate selfish move. We could stop all competition, treat each other with utmost compassion, and maximize our limited time in each body. But alas, the selfish versions of us are too underdeveloped in that dimension to let that happen just yet. I wonder what it would take for each of us to reach the understanding that we’re all the same soul.

  • Thank you! I’m here asking for advice on how to respond to gaslighting, and people are telling me it’s not gaslighting. I don’t have to prove with specific details that it’s gaslighting as if I’m in a fight with them. Yet, when I provide the details anyway, I’m told it is not gaslighting. I’m thinking they’re trolling me by gaslighting me further or theyre just that unhealthy.

Additionally with this girl, these are only the gaslighting attempts. There have been a few other manipulation tactics used as well. I rather not share them, but they were quite concerning on their own.

I will absolutely not tolerate any gaslighting, and I gave her the benefit of the doubt twice in 6 weeks just in case I’m wrong anyway. I really rather end it. I just don’t know how to do it without making it a major issue or hinting at blaming her in anyway whatsoever.

  • I got some kvas and bread. When I asked the Russian food store worker if they had kvas, the guy looked away, slightly smiled as if it was a dumb question, and said, “Of course!” Then he took me to the kvas aisle and showed all of the options lol. I probably seemed pretty silly to him. While I was there, I also got some fresh bread that they made.

I tried the bread fresh, and it was okay. I tried the kvas and thought it was okay too. However, I sliced the bread, toasted it, and put butter on it. I had that with kvas on the side, and it was pretty good! They compliment each other very well. The bread is heavier than I’m used to and has a lot more flavor. I can see how someone that is used to that would think American white bread would seem like crap. By comparison, white bread is lacking consistency and flavor while also being too sweet. To me, the kvas tastes like a soda but less sweet and slightly bitter like molasses. I can see how this would be something someone would like if they drink it often. It has a unique taste that isn’t overwhelming. I noticed that I kept wanting more, where as coke is repugnant after a bit. Overall, I like it and am gonna be eating/drinking this for the next week. Thanks/Спасибо for the recommendation!

I like Linux because it let’s me do whatever I want on it. Windows is so controlling. For example in Windows, there are lots of occasions where a window will pop up asking you do make a decision, and while that window is up, you cannot click on any of the other windows. Say I want to save a file, but I want to look at the document. If the save window is up, I can’t review the document because it wont let me. That’s so freaking annoying.

Aside from all sorts of little annoyances like that, Linux is sooooo customizable. Using KDE PLasma, I could just add widgets on my desktop that show me the status orf my computer or even let me write notes right on the desktop. To do that on Windows, I have to mess with Rainmeter for days trying to figure out the proper settings using a text protocol I am not familiar with. While Linux does run into some difficulties, they tend to be easily solvable by just running an Internet search or posting on a forum relevant to your distro/DE.

Lastly, there are lots of things that just work on Linux that don’t on Windows. For instance, my network printer just works. I didn’t even have to install a driver. I just added the printer and it did everything else for me. Or, I could use KDE Connect and easily transfer files from my phone to my desktop and vice verse, get phone notifications on my desktop, and even text from it without any tinkering. It just works.

The only reason I could see people using Windows aside from subjective preferences is when they’re forced to because of work or they realllly want to play a one fo the few games that doesn’t work on Linux. Otherwise, Linux is just objectively better as a whole.
