Unfortunately we’ve pretty much used up all easily available resources. Anyone ‘starting over’ would have a much harder time getting the things they need to really get the ball rolling again.
When humans first discovered gold they practically only had to scoop it out of rivers. You’ll be hard pressed to find any streams with such appreciable production anywhere in the world today.
Nah, I’m willing to bet there is actual physical life in our very own solar system (apart from all life on Earth, of course). Europa’s oceans for example have a decently high probability of hosting microbial life.
Of course, discovering primitive life all around us would be a bad sign the great filter is still ahead of us instead of behind us…
The most boring one: most species off themselves before they fully get off their starting planet. We will go the same way. Take your pick from climate change, war, pandemic, … or even a combination of several!
Depends on the capabilities. If i can automatically open my garage door with my mind or draw a bath, or control a cursor on a screen, then no. If it enables entire new ways of experiencing sensations or memories, or ways to share them, or fully immerse you in a virtual world indistinguishable from reality, then maybe. If it’s not from a company Musk has any hand in.

AMAROK by Mike Oldfield. Not just the music itself (it’s quite a trip), but the story of its development:
He was under contract for Virgin to produce another long form album, but he and Branson had a falling out. Regardless, Branson threatened legal trouble if Oldfield didn’t go through with it. He was hoping for a record with radio-friendly hits like “Shadow on the Wall” and “Moonlight Shadow” that could be peddled to radio stations.
So Oldfield composed AMAROK. It contains one single track, spanning the entire length of the 60+ minute album. That way, Branson couldn’t simply lift any tracks and use them as singles.
But wait, there’s more! Since Oldfield knew that if he did this, Branson would simply make a selection of excerpts from the album and use those as singles. This had been done before while they still got along or even before he signed with Virgin, so they knew it could work, cfr the “Incantations”, “Ommadawn”, “Hergest Ridge”, …
The “Amarok” track is… a special kind of composition. It’s by no means bad - it’s actually pretty great from a technical standpoint. But what you decidedly cannot do, is attribute it to any specific genre, nor easily mark the beginnings and endings of the different “tracks” comprising the record.
Thus, Oldfield won this battle and Amarok was pretty much impossible to use for radioplay. I still enjoy it to this day though.
Finntroll live in a small venue in Belgium called Biebob. The hall is barely bigger than a decent café, so that means everyone is very close to the band. Once they started playing, the ENTIRE hall went absolutely berserk. Including the staff behind the tables and technical materials. Everyone was so completely enthralled that it was an almost religious experience. I’ve never before or after seen anything like it. Must’ve been over 15 years ago though.
Every single day I make random people happy just by having them look at me. Most of them will correctly assume “Poor fucker, my life may be bad, but at least I’m not him!”

Both. I studied journalism (strike 1) and graduated in 2008 (strike 2). I chose “print” as my option (strike 3).
Consequences: never worked a day in journalism in my life. Judging by the state of journalism globally in 2024, I can’t say that I mind. Having “a” degree is still a necessity for most non-menial jobs, so in that regard it always came in handy. Cost of the education wasn’t through the roof, didn’t have to take on any loans or such. To this day my only debt ever is my mortgage to the bank, looking to keep it that way.

I have three Greek tortoises and I hope my son will continue to care for them after I’m gone. Barring any sudden illnesses or accidents they should outlive me by a few decades.
