I was looking forward to this kickstarter, but it’s been months without a launch so I’m thinking it’s just vaporware at this point.
There’s Matrix, but I think the under-development is a similar story there, to speak nothing of the infrastructure and UX of Discord that would be hard to pull people away from.

The only FOSS alternative is Matrix. Discord itself cannot/shouldn’t be used with an alternative client because it’s against the Discord TOS.
Can’t quite remember if it has drag and drop, but the latex support is pretty top notch - especially if you need to do in-line equations.
Doesn’t Juypter have a presentation mode?
