Sure, but my first month of Lemmy was via the web. I still use Mastodon on the web (no app). Whenever I find myself on Reddit (via search) it’s web only. If someone sends me a random YouTube link, I open it in the web. On the off chance someone sends me a random TikTok link, web only.
Again I don’t use any of these apps, but if someone sends me a loops link and it says install the app, I’ll just ignore it.
Honestly that’s great news, but wouldn’t a web version have made wayyyyyyy more sense?
So far, there is only some user settings accessible in the web interface. I don’t have an iPhone, hence I cannot say for their app. The android app will come later, apparently.
I don’t give a shit about TikTok or short form video but legitimately how is this expected to succeed with these limitations? Clearly people like this stuff but can a fediverse service really afford to be iPhone only? This truly seems doomed to fail.

I bought one but didn’t have a data plan. Jumping from WiFi to WiFi still felt like magic. It was a laptop that fit in my pants.
I post more on Lemmy since I think people will actually read what I wrote. I used to post a lot on Reddit too, but that was MANY years ago.
However one of the big reasons I post is to hopefully get the conversation started. I figure with zero comments someone is less likely to post. With one stupid comment, someone might respond.

Honestly it can start small, just be somewhere where harmless friendly interactions can happen. Walking around, at the store, just doing mundane things.

This reporting isn’t fact, it’s reporting in progress. At the moment it doesn’t find the always listening allegation to be true, but not impossible either.
It’s not trusting Big Tech, it’s understanding that Little Tech can also lie.
Cox Media Group wants to hype up their product and use AI buzzwords. To be seen as reliable they say that they work with Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc.
The report is basically CMG saying they can do X, and everyone else calling bullshit. (And in response CMG clarifying “No, we don’t actually do that” and then also removing the companies they don’t actually work with.)
It isn’t definitively saying they don’t, but also isn’t saying that they do. You can assume the worst if you like, but that doesn’t mean the worst is actually true.
Is it possible this type of spying exists? Yes. Is it possible this is a cover up? Yes. Do we have actual data to support that? No.
Tomorrow an investigation may reveal otherwise, but for now it doesn’t seem to be the case.
So the community (users) can move, but I just realized that when an instance shuts down the community (posts) limps on, preventing the community (posts) from actually dying and the community (users) from moving on.

Re Concentration I’m not concerned that it is as of yet a problem. However I do think it is also a larger problem for Mastodon and other user-centric platforms than it is to Lemmy and other community-cetric platforms.
If a Mastodon user wants to leave their server there are migration pains. If your server makes a controversial change, you may have to migrate. As a follower if something goes wrong I have to remember that I was following Ada & Bob, but maybe Bob now goes by Bobby.
However as a Lemmy user I can just abandon my server and be done with it. If my server makes a controversial change, I can just leave. As a community follower can watch as Star Trek Memes becomes Risa, or Risa becomes Ten Forward. The names changed completely but it’s easy to find my community again.
I use flat case most of the time, but I also try to stick to single word files so there is no case to get in the way.
I think for documents I might share like a PDF I’d use Pascal case.
In a classroom or teaching setting I will sometimes use Kebab case as I find it is the least confusing and makes it extra clear where the word division is. Similarly I avoid Dot notation since it’s confusing for folks coming from a Windows world.
And I would avoid Screaming because that’s just too loud anywhere.
Sure that reveals your distro, but also consider what is in the logs you’re sharing. If you’re asking for help you probably also already said that you’re running Debian. Or the logs are full of apt logs already, querying a well known Debian mirror.
You’re right that PC is a fine default, but think about the whole picture as well.
Is the problem account making or data having persistence/backups?
Or is the issue having an account on service A, service A dieing and then when you create an account on service B you have to start over again, so we need to improve account portability?
I guess I also wonder… Is that a real problem for Lemmy? For Mastodon where you follow users sure, but does anyone care about their Lemmy account?

I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that servers die because they are difficult to maintain. This is perhaps especially true for kbin/mbin based servers.
I suppose for enough money some might be willing to maintain, but I’m not sure it’s that simple.

I’m human, your human, the community is made up of humans. Act like a reasonable human, and yes, you get to define what is reasonable.
If bots could mod, we would just have them mod, but that would suck.
In terms of rule bending, if it’s in good faith then let it go. If you want to remind someone, that’s fine.
