Do you have a static IP address? CG-NAT has done a really great job of hindering torrents, since my understanding is that at least one side of the connection needs to have an open port. So, if you don’t, then only the few people who do are able to download from you, which can make it seem like no one wants your stuff.

Ive never had to download a codec to use VLC, it should come built-in with every codec you may reasonably encounter on commercial DVDs.

Same here. I only support those companies because they’re the best options for what they offer, and I’m not gonna let perfection get in the way of progress. Even though Mozilla is making some business choices I don’t agree with, I’m gonna keep recommending Firefox until some other non-Chromium browser comes along (which unfortunately isn’t gonna happen for a long time).

Same with AMD- they are so much more friendly to the open-source community than Nvidia or Intel, so I will recommend them to everyone, until the moment they start being worse. At that point, I’ll start recommending whoever seems best at that point in time.

You could always put it into service as a network wide ad blocker with PiHole. Might also speed up web browsing a bit too, since PiHole also works as a DNS cache.

Start feeding it too, or get one of the neighbors who’s been feeding it to help out. Your best bet is a feral cat trap, which are kinda pricey, but if you call around to a few local rescues or “trap, neuter, release” programs, they may be able to lend you one. Then you can likely just use food to lure it into the trap.

Yup. It was funny how during the 2020 election cycle they briefly had to change all their merch to say “keep America great” despite continuing to use the MAGA slogan throughout most of Trump’s administration. Okay so genuine question from someone who’s used various distros for all sorts of things over the years, just never as a daily driver. What sorts of things have caused your revulsion towards Windows? Aside from Microsoft’s bullcrap like Alexa or MS Store ads which can all be disabled, I’ve personally never had enough of a problem with Windows that justified the effort required to move away from it. And I would consider myself a power user who loves to customize things.

Again, I just want to genuinely understand what sorts of problems people have that cause them to hate using Windows that much, even if they’re just subjective things.

Are you asking this in a theoretical, “just for fun” sort of way? If so, any OS that is too old to support USB would be resistant, such as AmigaOS. Otherwise, there really isn’t anything you can do to protect against those types of devices short of completely disabling USB altogether.

I would look for a dongle that specifically markets itself as being Raspberry Pi compatible. Most stuff you find will prioritize Windows, but if it’s marketed to work with the Pi you know it’ll have at least some level of Linux compatibility. Once you find one, try to figure out what chipset it uses, then search if it’s supported by a handful of the distros you wanna try.

Weirdly, taking caffeine pills makes me super sleepy. I have ADHD so stimulants affect me differently from most people, but coffee doesn’t make me drowsy at all. The only thing I can think of is that with a pill, the full dose is absorbed all at once, while with a drink, it’s spread out over the time it takes to drink it.

Try searching your YouTube watch history for those videos and removing them. That seems to actually make the algorithm pretend you never saw them, and so it doesn’t consider them in future recommendations (at least, in my experience).

Yup, this is the real reason. When you’re a kid/teenager, you don’t realize just how much free time you have to spend on stuff like video games. Then you become an adult and have way more responsibilities, and suddenly video games just aren’t as appealing as a time sink as they used to be.

In that case, I don’t think the problem is with Arch. The battery is likely shot, as going from partly charged -> dead that quickly is a very common symptom of one that’s reached the end of its life.
