To me, the most unrealistic part of that ad is not the edge to edge displays, or the holograms emanating from them, or the overall inefficiency of it all, but rather just that you could never have a place that full of screens without ads being everywhere.

I remember first watching that video on my first smartphone and thinking “When will they ever make a phone without bezels?” And now they pretty much have, but my experience was not some artistic interface full of aesthetically pleasing data and art. It was a YouTube video completely surrounded by ad content.

I am prepared to hide under a rock after this comment, but…

Linux even powers the most widely-used consumer OS in the world. It just happens to take the form of Android.

It’s like cars. A lot of people drive them every day. Not as many people know how they work or how to fix them.

If someone spends their entire life studying medicine or law or art, etc., or any other trade that has nothing to do with their computer OS, I don’t blame them for simply not having any remaining brain space to support an entire new set of skills just to maintain their computer when they are used to Windows or MacOS doing everything for them.

From an end user perspective there’s not that much to think about, thankfully.

Basically, it’s like having two websites that mirror each other’s content. You can sign up for Forum A and be able to read and write posts that users on Forum B can also see. People’s names are tagged with the name of the forum they are registered at, but otherwise everything you do and see happens on your own site of choice and there’s no difference where it comes from.

If Forum A doesn’t like Forum C, but Forum B doesn’t mind, Forum A can choose to disconnect from Forum C and hide their users and posts, while Forum B can still see both. It only gets tricky when someone from Forum B makes a post that people from both Forums A and C are in, but all of the posts from C users are invisible to A users.

I don’t know who that is, so I guess I don’t think anything at all.

Makes me wonder if a stronger system of government subsidies could replace the need for VC for some startups. The government agrees to back your expenses for X number of years until you have the means to pay back the investment, and if the startup flops in the end, the government takes the IP. If the startup is still deemed to have potential, the government continues operating the company as a state-sponsored org or folds it into a state agency to ensure the livelihoods of the startup’s employees.

End result is that startups aren’t forced into situations by VCs where they have to go public, and if they end up going under anyways by failing to pay back the government’s investment (tax payer money, basically) it is seen as a purchase of potentially valuable IP which can be made available to the public for the betterment of society and industry.

Perfect is in the eyes (or ears, in this case) of the beholder. A song can sound like the best thing you’ve ever heard, and you could make an entire album out of it, but the pursuit of perfection is futile.

Ask any artist if they’ve ever released a perfect album, there will not be a “yes”. Every artist is keenly aware of their own faults/shortcomings and end up thinking about what tracks they would have done better. You could have someone make music for a thousand years and they’d still think of something else they could have done the next day. And even then, what sounds better to an artist may not sound better to their listeners, so perfection is simply not worth wasting brain space over.

That does look better.

For the drag and drop space, however, would a simple “Right Click > Open In” not be easier? Or just dragging the file over the application on the taskbar?

I have not used either, but I can say that Krita’s UI is closer to Photoshop than GIMP’s appears to be. That might be why people are opting for that application, for the sense of familiarity if they were trained on Photoshop.

I will say that any application which is used for digital painting should also be good at image manipulation, so if Krita does both well, I can see why it would be preferred over GIMP if the painting tools are lacking.

Looking over the screenshots, for GIMP, I am hoping that is not the default layout of tools. Having a jumbled block of icons is a lot harder to visually parse than a stack of pairs. I also find myself wondering why they use up so much space on the left to include a weird cutout of their mascot above the tools.

On the right, I am also not sure why the layer thumbnails are pushed so far to the right when they could be immediately adjacent to the visibility toggle.

It doesn’t look terrible to me, but I am not surprised that people using an app for visual design might be more critical of design flaws in the app itself.

Let them feel like no one cares and their effort is being wasted, and they eventually get bored and stop. On Lemmy, downvote if you want to, but personally I don’t even like giving them the satisfaction of knowing someone read their message.
