I have a pixel 6 pro, but I wouldn’t recommend it. You’d think Google is capable of providing a perfect Android experience, but my old Note 9 was way less buggy.

I’ve had lots of issues with 3rd party launchers (nova), I can’t even use the USBC with a dongle and second screen (my old Note could do this without issues). Also this is my first phone without headphone jack and SD slot, both I really miss. Just in general the software (especially in the beginning) felt really buggy with small glitches etc.

No but I am looking for a new laptop and this time I’ll definitely spent more time checking Linux compatibility.

My previous thinkpad worked fine out of the box, but my current laptop is an HP Omen, that I mostly selected for the price to performance ratio. But I immediately learned that Linux compatibility sucked. Like not being able to boot an Ubuntu usb drive (without messing with the boot parameters).

I have an nvidia card and don’t game, that Intel might be the better option.

Do they also have like kebab/swarma places that are open 24/7? Where I live drunk people always seem to want to eat something like that.

You’re right, although I wouldn’t be surprised that at some point MacOS will have a mandatory app store to protect you.

I kind of really dislike the notion that you only use Linux because you are too poor for Apple.

I don’t use Apple because I don’t like to be stuck in a walled garden where a company decides what’s best for me.

I know it’s just a meme, but I think too many people actually think Linux is somehow inferior to Apple (MacOS) while I think it’s the other way around.

I totally get that and I used to do the same. Maybe this community is different but on some online communities people kind of looked down on mint and pretended it was only a beginner distro.

I tried so many distros in the last decade, but I recently had to start with a fresh setup again and I went with Linux Mint. I think it’s the most underestimated workhorse you can get. Everything just works, tons of help online if you need it and instead of tweaking it forever you just get work done.

This is exactly why those people never become billionaires. You can’t make billions without screwing over people and the environment.

Do we really want to be bigger anyway? I kind of like where Linux as a desktop isn’t really big enough for all the scammers and malware makers to care.

(And I know it’s huge for servers and malware also targets that, but they are usually maintained by professionals, not your parents that would probably run every shell script they are offered as help)

If Linux would become the biggest desktop os you are going to find so much more bad advice whenever searching for help online. I wonder if the nice people we have now are really ready for when the terrible people invade the community.

I specifically bought a Brother printer because they at least try to support Linux. My previous one Samsung was much worse, it had Google cloud print so I could still use it. But Google like always killed something people liked.

This was the one for me, was running Debian a few years ago, I was really happy with how everything worked.

But at work I noticed a lot of tools I needed where pretty old. Like an old version of maven or an old version of Firefox or npm.

You can probably work around it, but I just went back to Mint again.

I would say use Mint, I think nowadays that’s the better beginner distro. Actually it’s also kind of the pro-user distro. Fiddling around to tweak everything and get it just right is fun in your 20s, but when you need to work, have kids and a wife mint is fine 😛

They made it basically unusable with Firefox, so unless you also want to install Edge it really sucks

What kind of things do you need to do? For software development my experience is that it’s just install and you can start working. Maybe one tutorial to get kubernetes running locally.
