Fair – what I meant was more about the Teams binary kind of not being needed at all (you can use the web version without it). So having a Linux binary explicitly just seems a little weird, marketing aside.

I think MS assumes no one will use it. But having Linux builds of some of their software enhances their “MS loves Linux” marketing.

Teams is another example.

Kicad is up there with the paid options for electronic schematic drafting / PCB design. I don’t use a lot of KDE stuff since I also don’t use KDE, but Kicad is absolutely essential for me.

I wouldn’t call it an appliance, but I almost always use cast iron for beef.

It’s kind of fascinating: the Steam Deck is the only device I can think of with a “halo effect” that doesn’t involve giving a company more money: the ecosystem it pulls you into is an open one, and you don’t even have to have purchased a Deck to jump in based on the idea alone.

It does matter. But all my big displays are still LCD, because of cost.

It’s about blackpoint. With an LED, pixels which are black still have a backlight. This makes them a kind of grey.

With OLED, the pixels themselves emit light. This means that black pixels are unlit.

The difference is obvious in a dimly lit room looking at dark content.

That said, while I would love OLEDs all around, they’re expensive. I’m willing to give up having true blacks for the cost difference. It may be different as costs on OLED come down.

I do have an OLED phone, because Samsung is pumping out OLEDs on everything.

I don’t disagree with this hot take. But the major difference is the sheer resources needed to have an LLM in place of a “do one thing right” utility like sed. In that sense, they are incomparable.

Almost everything you ingest from day to day on your PC, in terms of multimedia content, is compressed.

File compression is a necessity, as it makes transmission of such media over the internet much more teneble. But uncompressed video carries a lot more information – not necessarily all useful information, but it is there.

Maybe it is. I always considered it a courtesy since otherwise it can be difficult to see what was edited. It’s from my reddit days.

But if the file system needs extra writes anyway for CoW, and the SSD needs its own CoW, then wouldn’t that end up being exponential writes? Or is there some mechanism which mitigates that?

I don’t disagree with that. They’re also a much smaller group so I think it just stands to reason.

But I do appreciate that they’re taking chances (probably for the same reason). Cosmic is quite impressive already and a good alternative to Gnome/KDE/Cinnamon; better than the Pop Shell on Gnome.

I hate the idea of still being on Pop. But it’s so damned pleasant.
