They used to have invite threads on Reddit - that’s how I got mine when the API changes were announced. I think it was in Reddit alternatives subreddit? Not sure, haven’t been back since. If there’s still a thread (and if the subreddit even exists still), asking there might work.
I don’t know (or, frankly, care much) about the “why”, and I like Lemmy the way it is, but if your looking for deeper discussion and longer posts I do recommend Tildes, if you can get an invite: https://tildes.net/ It’s not open to the public, so the post volume is quite low, but most responses are well thought out, longer and often thought-provoking. I don’t post much there, but enjoy reading it a lot.
Server doesn’t really matter much (to me), but I’m on toot.community because I’m mentally a child and like the funny name :)
App-wise, I really enjoy Moshidon, been using the nightly version for a while now: https://github.com/LucasGGamerM/moshidon
I solved this issue by following multiple tags that interest me. People tend to tag their posts on Mastodon it seems, so discovering posts about, say, wine and cacti is as easy as following #wine #cactus #cacti #redwine #oragewine and so on and so forth - it’s working pretty good for me without an algorithm recommending stuff to me, maybe it’s worth a try?
Oh cool! I’ll need to look into that, thanks! Wonder if there’s a way to convert an existing Windows into this somehow, installed software and all, because that would be perfect…
Right, but you have to boot into Windows first to even get the update in the first place…
So, no booting into Windows until this is fixed then? Fine by me. Hell, might actually make me uninstall it completely and free some disk space…
Same here. I was fine with W10, but the recent W11 shenanigans were the last straw, and I decided to give Linux Mint a try. Couldn’t be happier - everything is so much more snappy now. And since I game on consoles only and my crappy PC was never a gaming machine to begin with, I have zero issues - wish I switched sooner!
Which means one more screen to show ads - this is why they do it…
No, thanks. Here’s an idea Google - how about you keep your greedy paws off the apps I install from different sources, since I have good reasons for doing so?
Thing is, I want really a fan of boybands back then, so I have no idea why it hit me so hard now - I didn’t hate them, but I preferred other things. This song though, welp, hook, line and sinker. I even love the silly wink-wink-nodge-nudge lines like “boys are in sync” - I’m literally listening to the song as I write this, but the way :D
Released literally this week: On-lyne “Party of your lifetime”. It’s from an upcoming update for a game called Warframe, and it’s basically distilled 90s boyband earworm. It’s like Backstreet Boys and N Sync had a bunch of boy babies, fed them crack and taught them to sing. And for some reason I unironically LOVE it - I’ve been listening to it on repeat for hours, I need help :P
Elden Ring and most other soulslikes - I don’t have the skill, time or will to “git gud” at them, but they are a beautiful spectacle and a joy to watch, especially when watching someone who plays really well.
Not really, because I normally don’t even look at or register usernames unless I emphatically agree or disagree with a post. I’ve been doing this for years, first on forums, then on reddit and now here. I don’t want to be biased against the content of the message just because I like or dislike a particular poster, so I mostly ignore usernames altogether.
Out of curiosity, since I switched from Windows to Mint recently so I’m not married to it just yet - what would be your recommended distro for Windows users that uses a better/newer tech stack? Mint worked out of the box for me, but if love to try other distros too if they’re better.
The anti-AI knee-jerk reactions can be extreme, I agree, but at the same time one of important features of Mastodon is that your feed is nor controlled by an algorithm in any way.
So when a company comes, takes those posts and screws with them to create an algorithm to show them, I understand people getting angry - at least some of them joined to be free of that exact thing…
The wildest part is that he’s surprised that Mastodon peeps would react negatively to their posts being scrapped without consent or even notification and fed into an AI model. Like, are you for real dude? Have you spent more than 4 seconds on Mastodon and noticed their (our?) general attitude towards AI? Come the hell on…
I made a live wallpaper using an Android app called Magic Fluids (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.magicfluids) that is fully black, but creates a flame effect every time I tap the screen or slide my finger across it. Yeah, edgy and tacky AF, but it really is a pretty cool effect and I’ve been using it for years, so whatever.
