Idk, it doesn’t really bother me. I’ve never been a picky eater. I used to just buy microwave meals basically every day, maybe cooking some simple pasta in the weekend. But I’ve become a bit more health minded and since I’d basically eat everything anyway I might as well throw some simple stuff together with a lot of vegetables and as little processed food and added sugar as possible.

I cook for multiple days, so the same as yesterday and the day before. I was lazy so I bought some pre-cut vegetables (like 800 grams), some vegan chicken replacement, and a red pepper, cooked some rice and added soy sause and some spices. It turned out very nice, apart from the red pepper which is a bit too spicy for my very Dutch tastebuds. Eating this is like russian roulette, every bite will either be very nice or will put my mouth on fire.

I think it’d because the Trackmania arcade mode doesn’t really let you affect anyone else. Everyone in the server is obviously trying to go as fast as possible,and to a degree also get as high up on the session leaderboard as possible, but you can’t ruin each others laps. And while finishing high on the session leaderboard is nice, the overall goal for everyone is to get a good enough time on the map in general. To beat your own PB, to get all medals. So essentially the real opponent is your past self. This leads people to get quite cooperative. Having discussions about how to tackle certain parts of the track, congretulating each other with setting a new PB, etc.

Playing against random people and especially with random people in other competitive games seems to generally get toxic. People blaming you for ruining their game, people getting mad. To me it’s very stressful. Even if I know that it shouldn’t affect me, and I’m never going to meet them again, it still does affect me negatively

At the moment basically anything competitive/ranked. I don’t want to compete online anymore because I know that I’ll have to go on an insane grind to get good. Only exception is trackmania because it somehow doesn’t upset me quite like other ranked online games. But even then I only play the “arcade” mode and not ranked

Lemmy generally attracts the same kind of person that would also use Linux. Both of them are open source and community driven alternatives to software otherwise provided by large corporations and milked for every last cent. Both of them require just a bit more knowledge in order to comfortably use them. Linux with all the distro’s and desktop environments, Lemmy with all the instances and apps/front-ends. We’re very much a bubble here.

I was just about to post the same thing. I’ve been using Linux for almost 10 years. I never really understood the folder layout anyway into this detail. My reasoning always was that /lib was more system-wide and /usr/lib was for stuff installed for me only. That never made sense though, since there is only one /usr and not one for every user. But I never really thought further, I just let it be.

Yeah same, but with like 2K hours. At some point I was Grand Champion 1 or something. I could probably win against 2 noobs without me using jump and boost, but in the few moments I played against pros I got equally clapped. It’s insane to me how much better pro players are.

After Epic bought it the whole game slowly went to shit though. Psyonix once treated the game and its community as their baby, but it just became a soulless money printer without any decent innovation. So I barely play anymore, even though the core game is ultimately still fun.

I’ve unfortunately bought a phone (Pixel 8) now without a headphone jack. Already had multiple moments where I had to confront the consequences of this action. Why don’t modern phones have them anymore :(

Because that’s what I’m missing. I like the apps, I like the site, but I need content. And not memes or politics, but specific niche topics. The nice thing about Reddit is that there’s more than enough content about basically anything. Non mainstream music (DnB, Hardstyle, Trance), games, hobbies. There are always hundreds ,if not thousands of people engaging. I don’t want a discussion with 3 other people, I want a large community that can actually provide me with a lot of new information and keeps itself going without any effort from my end.

Apart from the obvious stuff like wheels and fire:

I recently got my hands on an analogue camera (Canon EOS 300), which I’m now using to take some pictures. The first batch of pictures got back last week and confirmed to me that the device is still in working condition.

Besides that I also have an old Philips tape player that used to use until one of the gears snapped in half. I ordered a replacement gear but getting to the gear and replacing it has proven more challenging than hoped so I’m not using it currently.

And I still collect CDs, even though I also use Spotify.

I’m probably too old (29), but I do tend to buy CDs of artists I like. 2 weeks ago I was at a festival and bought 3 CDs (as well as some other stuff). Today I’m expecting another CD to arrive in my letterbox.

Yeah exactly. I always looked forward to reading English books. And in German classes I’d also look forward to reading, though that probably had to do more with how bad I was at German. Dutch literature is just boring and depressing for most highschoolers. I’m sure for some older people it was exciting, and those must’ve been the people deciding that forcing us to read this stuff was a good idea.

The Dutch education system forced us to read many Dutch works of literature every year in the last years of highschool. This completely ruined my joynin reading, since imo most Dutch literature is boring. Interesting books like the Lord of the Rings or Dune were not allowed since they weren’t Dutch.

The worst memory of them all was the book called “De Grote Zaal”. Basically the entire book was about a dying old lady in the last years of her life reflecting on her life. It wasn’t a thick book, but it felt like it took ages because nothing happened and it had exactly nothing in common with the average life and interests of a highschooler.

Before the last years of highschool I’d always read books for fun, even when school started requiring it, because it was fun. Books like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter (fck J.K Rowling), Star Wars, and countless others that I’m missing were great fun. But Dutch literature is a lot about old people, WW2, etc. Dutch fantasy books were not considered literature because they were too much fun to read.

Because words have different weight for different people. I feel like Americans are so sensitive about words like “fuck” (and many other words). Here in the Netherlands I grew up with much more liberal use of swear words. So to me it’s way less harsh to say “fuck this rain” or something, it’s just a way to communicate my feelings about the rain, just like I’d say “kutweer” in Dutch. Saying it in a more eloquent way, i.e. “this rain is pretty suboptimal” would not accurately convey my feelings.

I’m on Arch (actually a converted Antergos) and I have an NVIDIA card as well. My first attempt a few months ago was horrible, bricking my system and requiring a bootable USB an a whole evening to get Linux working again.

My second attempt was recently, and went a lot better. X11 no longer seems to work, so I’m kinda stuck with it, but it feels snappy as long as my second monitor is disconnected. I’ve yet to try some gaming. My main monitor is a VRR 144Hz panel with garbage-tier HDR. The HDR worked out of the box on KDE Plasma, with the same shitty quality as on Windows, so I immediately turned it off again. When my second monitor is connected I get terrible hitching. Every second or so the screen just freezes for hundreds of milliseconds. Something about it (1280x1024, 75Hz, DVI) must not make Wayland happy. No settings seem to change anything, only physically disconnecting the monitor seems to work.

It’s not like I totally didn’t enjoy it, but Red Dead Redemption 2. The game was good in many ways, and I totally get why it’s so we’ll loved, but I just have nothing with the setting. I don’t like cowboys, I don’t like playing as an asshole who makes bad decision after bad decision, and I also don’t like a setting where women are basically property. Just not really my vibe. I just came from Cyberpunk 2077 and the contrast was quite big, even though Cyberpunk is supposed to be more dystopian

My 10 year old laptop (which has been running Linux for 9.5 years now) has an SSD, so it’ll restart in a normal amount of time. Even old laptops no longer have HDDs only

2K per year, subsidized by the Dutch government afaik, because International students pay way more.

Not anymore, since I got a real job… They do sometimes give some money as a present to buy something nice, but it’s no longer necessary. They did help me during my study though, paying the ~€2K uni fees every year and some other smaller stuff, so I could focus on rent, groceries, study material, etc. Combined with that, I had some side jobs to keep the study loan pretty small and manageable .

Based on anecdotal evidence, that was kind of the middle of the road. Some friends had very rich parents, who basically paid everything. Other people basically had to pay everything, which lead to huge loans. I think this level of support was pretty much optimal. It forced me to think about money instead of just buying everything I wanted, but also made it easy for me to focus on my study instead of surviving.

I bought a ThinkPad new in 2014 for my study for like 1200 euro’s. She’s still happily purring today. Around 2019 I made the mistake of emptying a cup of tea into the ThinkPad accidentally and then holding it upside down to get the water out. I think I should’ve just let it leak out of the bottom since the laptop has holes for that, but I panicked. This broke the keyboard, but not the rest of the laptop. I got an official new keyboard for like 100 euro’s which came with a tool and the simple instructions, and since then everything has been working flawlessly.

So I recommend ThinkPads, although I can’t really say anything about compatibility of new models
