Linux@lemmy.ml•I just found out my fiancee wants to switch to linux, lets start a distro war, what should be her first? + other questions
12·16 days agoIf older computer that works fine, I’d get a new 780m (Amd) mini pc. They support 3+ monitors, have 2 network ports allowing to “daisy chain” the old computer. No transfering of anything, or worrying about getting old stuff still working.
Deskflow is a mouse/keyboard sharing app. If you keep old computer in sleep mode you don’t need extra keyboard/mouse, but power outages, mean that if you don’t have a floor standing old pc you can stack old keyboard/mouse on top of, then you will need to occasionally plug in keyboard and mouse into old computer to get deskflow restarted (if you don’t put it as autostart).
It’s far more convenient than dual booting. Can use resources from both computers in network, and seemless mouse/keyboard focus. Switching 1 monitor for occasional use is better than dual booting, because rebooting on older computers especially is slow.
Deskflow needs a modern kernal linux distribution. Ubuntu 24.04 is recent enough. Linux mint has not upgraded kernel yet. AFAIU, the only difference between mint (recommended here) and Ubuntu is a slightly prettier version of kde.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why in western democratic countries Zionism is not banned like Nazism?
1·22 days agoOP is saying they used to be better at managing media narratives that made them out to be the good guys. Social video of genocide is hard to hasbara over, but so is very naked political extremist speech. They used to be better at appearing reluctant to do offensive operations.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why in western democratic countries Zionism is not banned like Nazism?
1·22 days agoThe Neocon movement were all led by Ultra Zionists, and blessed by greatest gift ever of 9/11 for their 7 regimes in 7 years (all Israel resistant nations) war plans. RNC candidates would campaign on Christian (values) supremacy, and DNC on liberal supremacy. GWB campaigned on peace with Iraq. After 9/11, while RNC would loudly chest thump for war calling their DNC opponents weak, DNC always supported the most neocon zionist supremacist candidates with some minority (
DEI) appeal for President, and quiet Neocon Zionism (justified on Apartheid ethnostate having healthcare, education and criminalization of raping Jewish women) liberal supremacism justification for Zionism/Neocon policies. Neocon liberal supremacism is behind Biden’s war on Russia, demonizing Putin’s corruption reforms from previous CIA puppet Yeltsin.Direct warmongering advocacy is very rare in political races, and Trump’s magik skill is “all wars will end because only I can be tough and scary”. So we just vote on what the media tells us are the issues, which tend to minimize Israel/neocon war. The record funded primaries against Democrats by AIPAC were only successful when Israel was not at all spoken out loud. Some other issue/attack was the focus.
Once in office, all money for Israel/neocon war and oligarchy. No money for any pluralism campaign rally cry

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why in western democratic countries Zionism is not banned like Nazism?
1·22 days agoSo, basically, people are okay with what the Nazis did between 1932 and 1941. But from 1941 onwards, Nazis went over some line that is not acceptable.
The US has always shared NAZI ideology relative to the threat of Communism. That pre-1941 honeymoon period was due to shared ideology.

1·23 days agoIn origins section, there were widespread European establishment plans for “solving the Jewish problem” 50 years before Hitler. Hitler’s demonization of Jews was based on WW1 German Zionist treason of Germany with US/UK lobbying to join war, and Communist movement figureheads. What was anti-Jewish sentiment in Europe based on in the 1870s?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why in western democratic countries Zionism is not banned like Nazism?
1·23 days agoToday, Christofascism is, if not just strongly allied to Zionist ethnic supremacy, is subservient to it. Biblical passages that validate all Netanyahu actions become the most important biblical passages, for scum like Ted Cruz to say out loud. It’s a common goal to exterminate Islam. The only explanation for the confluence is Zionist money determining elections is also Zionist money determining Christian pastor sermons. It started with rapture absurdity, but it’s now total agreement that Jews are the chosen people and deserve every land claim. The bribery to accept Jewish supremacy does not ever go away, and supposed rapture moment where Jews are supposed to convert to Christianity, will never come.
Gaslighting the right/christofacsits to support Israel is encouraging their violent fascist support that is useful to Israel. Anytime a Jew is harmed in America, media must do 24/7 Zionist/Israel supremacy propaganda, and so the best possible outcome for Zionism.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why in western democratic countries Zionism is not banned like Nazism?
31·23 days agoThe Zionists are in charge of CIA, and CIA is in charge of every democracy. Democracies not sufficiently supportive of NATO/Israel are rogue authoritarian regimes with rigged elections, that need more CIA NGOs, and media takeover, there to help.

2·1 month agoGattaca offered the hopeful promise of profit maximization through mass production of genetic engineering, though it’s unclear if government subsidies helped with the profit maximization.
Time will certainly create political pressure to make the bestest babies for the races who deserve the bestest babies. Maybe that does mean no medicaid coverage.
The strongest case for only ultra rich having access, is that it’s just a status symbol. AI and robotics will do all the work, so why be smart or fit? How smart do you need to be to just support fascist genocide? Being smart is only a path to considering human needs above fascist supremacist needs as a path to sustainability, with sustainability considered of value. Stupidity far more useful to near term “theft profitability with no consequences” of fascism.
humanspiral@lemmy.catoOllama - Local LLMs for everyone!@lemmy.world•Recommended HardwareEnglish
1·2 months agoHardware decisions are complete nightmare, because the best models the day after you decide will surely change. For, Coding/text better large models more important than fast dumber models, IMO
but 16gb, 5060ti
20gb, 7900 24gb, 7900xtxfor GPUs, I’d decide based on $/gb. They will all be fast enough. Nvidia generally faster, and so my pick for 16gb, if there are a lot of options with $100 of each other.
64-128gb, amd igpu or arm Mac (latter much better performance) lpddr speeds increasing next year, lpddr GPUs next year, maybe too. Nvidia spark and thor coming soon. wait for benchmarks on both.
256gb m4 max. 4 dimm slot 8700g is only PC desktop with igpu option. Older threadripper/xeon and cpu only could work.
512gb m3 ultraEven if you need high memory, software design/evolution could end up supporting dual cooperating models, or you may use a GPU for retraining/fine tuning.
You can also have multiple computers with shared mouse/keyboard software that switches based on active mouse monitor, and cascading network connects, but giant models are pretty slow when scaled this way, though GPUs on older hardware, or pure minimal full 128gb linux system for LLM only, but with other option of gaming exclusive mode, as opposed to your 300 browser tab main computer.
For me, I could expand recent 7835hs with 128gb ddr5, and/or get oculink GPU, but also and/or get mac/strix halo or other fairly expensive computer as a dedicated “HPC/AI expansion platform”. Or wait for better options.

23·2 months agoCloe Moretz. Talentless piece of shit I’ve hated since the remake of Finnish vampire movie. Winona Ryder has never been likeable. Bad in Girl interupted. Her best movie, still annyoying. Fairly recent Rom Com with Keanu Reeves. Angelina Jolie only good in Gigi. Girl interrupted, decent. Everthing else, awful. Julia Roberts terribad in Pretty Women, and nearly everything else. Erin Brockovich very good.
that installation will never again see a route to the internet.
That’s what I was suggesting for OP, other than perhaps a cakewalk/audio software update. Firewalled RD should be safe enough?
Your win10 computer doesn’t get nuked from orbit after magic date. Others pointed out music software is not portable enough.
I got a new win11 computer with space for linux. Can remote desktop (free options) into old computer. This is more convenient than dual booting. If you don’t use internet or install new software, not much will break on it. My old computer didn’t work for linux because of waking from sleep issues. My new computer is $450usd minipc 7840hs dual lan, 2 usb4 ports, that allows me to expand from 3 to 4 monitors with a desk edge portable touchscreen usb monitor. win11 is not that bad because it allows for a single task bar on the front monitor. The iGPU is a big upgrade over 1650super I had, and 32gb/1gb nvme is also an upgrade that gives me the room to install linux. I haven’t yet.
Linux is pretty easy for software installs. Mint is a good choice, because google will have the most hits. There are some distros that come with closed GPU drivers, but that is not particularly difficult to do yourself. win11 on a new computer can be ok, though, but I have had issues with every monitor waking from sleep every time (unplug/replug solution), or sleep command not lasting more than 3 minutes. Boot time is much quicker on new computer though, so shutdown not as painful. But if sleep worked flawlessly on this one in linux, would be good reason to go with.
