Hi, I’m a very low level Android user so forgive me if this is incorrect. I’ve seen references to use init_boot.img instead of boot.img

This is just from scanning around XDA this year and could well be irrelevant, but it may be worth double checking.

I wanted a OnePlus 12R and was checking the OP forums generally to get a feel for bootloader unlocking and custom ROM availablity.

    I hope this helps.

  • I would not swap my 12R for an 8a, no way. Screen size and fast charge are more important to me than anything the Pixel offers.

The compromises are less important to me. Camera, flat screen, availability of ROMs and all that, are probably the biggest. I can live with the camera, it’s fine for normal stuff. The curved screen can be annoying but only very occasionally. I can live with it.

There are already custom ROMs for the 12R. The process isn’t as straightforward but I don’t use them until official support ends. By then it’s likely to be smoothed out, along with the compatibility of things like Gcam.

I think the 12R is well worth considering in it’s own right as a decent phone. As an alternative to the 8a, for me there’s no competition.

    YMMV.

  • Best way is to use a different launcher. You can install a few and switch between them. Setting up a new one can be a bit time consuming but you get a feel for them doing so. Keep notes.

I used Nova for years but unfortunately it’s now owned by a data collection company. I found it difficult to find another but since being on Lemmy and reading posts like these, I’ve finally moved to Niagara.

It’s very different but I suggest it for you because of your need tothe search for installed apps. That’s what it’s based around, there’s no separate app drawer. It’s very clever and easy to use once set up, and well worth the effort.

The win is that it’s FOSS.

It’s not FOSS but the privacy policies are decent. You can read a summary here.

Most features are free but the paid version has a seven day trial. It’s a very reasonable cost which you pay annually and I think it’s worth it if you’re going to use the app. It’s very mature and the dev deserves to get paid for it, especially at the low cost he’s asking. Check his website.

As you can probably tell, I’m a huge fan.

EDIT - as pointed out, it’s not FOSS. My apologies and I’ve edited accordingly.

  • I’ve no idea why it has sponsored search results, but I’m sure that the dev is legit.

It uses a free for most features/pro for extras model, but it’s slightly different from the usual which you can read about on their medium blog here.

There’s no ads and no tracking/scraping for profit. And it’s genuinely different to use than anything else I’ve seen, but in a very good way. Like all launchers it takes some time and effort to set up but I’ve found it easy to use straight away.

Try it, you can always uninstall if you don’t like it. You can get pro for a seven day free trial but you don’t need it to start testing. I used it for a few hours and tried pro and I’m almost certainly going to pay to keep it.

  • I use a OnePlus 12R. It has an IR blaster and a side slider.

The screen is fantastic, the camera is decent, the speakers are fine for a phone.

The OS is fine, there’s almost no bloat and I never log in to the OEM account on any phone. The proprietary bits I use are the photo gallery and the side bar, both of which tell you what they do and don’t do in terms of privacy. Neither admit to tracking but I’m ok with that.

I’m not a privacy fanatic and I think using any device and/or service these days is going to open you at least partly to some kind of visibility.

Aside from that, I like ColorOS. It’s not miles from stock and the options for tinkering are generally useful for getting a phone to work the way you like, without being a Samsung shit show.

The 12R is smooth and powerful. If you can still get them from the OnePlus website with the free Buds 2 Pro, worth £170, for me it’s a no brainer. I was also able to use PayPal credit of 4 months at 0% interest, around £200 pm.

The availability and custom ROM support sealed the deal for me but you may find it worthwhile even without some of the points I made.

    Good luck!
