Great idea because the merch acts as an advertisement to support the project and create awareness. It’s the main reason why corporations like Adobe are so successful - they have a pervasive marketing campaign. We should do the same and wearing a hat, t-shirt or bag would help do that.

Thank God … I’ve been on Gimp and Scribus for the past 15 years, mainly because I could never afford Adobe products for the little bit of work I needed them for.
I was open source a long time ago because I just couldn’t afford paying for stuff for the little time I needed software. Now I’m happy to be fully open source and even contribute with donations to the projects I like the most. I donate annually now to projects like Wikipedia, Libreoffice, Scribus and Fediverse developers and projects.
This is one criticism I’ll always have with open source supporters … if you want open source alternatives, contribute with donations to them. Give anything you can afford … $1, $2, $10 … because they need money to survive and stay engaged and committed to their project.
If we all just stand aside and take advantage of free open software and not give anything, then we are no better than the corporations we were trying to avoid. Instead of corporations taking advantage of us, we are taking advantage of developers.
So if you want these open projects to live and survive, contribute to them with whatever you got. If we all just gave a dollar each to these projects, no matter what they are, the developers would have more than enough to maintain their work.
And whatever you contribute, it will be far less than the hundreds of dollars annually you would have given to a big corporation that would have just counted your money as profit and not directly contribute or support the actual developers.

The answer would probably be something sensible, within our ability and something we would be capable of.
We already know how to do this … we as a collective global civilization just actively refuse to do any of it unless we were forced to, either by war or by the realization that it will mean our extinction.
It’s not that we are a thousand years dumber than our descendants … we are just as intelligent and insightful as our ancestors a thousand years ago … it’s just that our short sightedness and greed gets the best of us.
In many ways we are still a lot like our prehistoric ancestors from 100,000 years ago who believed that our family should control all the unlimited amount of bananas in the jungle.

Sometimes … usually I just hit a wall because I don’t know enough but I know enough to get myself in trouble … so I just stop, reformat, reinstall and start all over.
About the biggest lesson I’ve learned from Linux is not to mess with too many things unless you want to learn about it and have lots of time in your hands.
Otherwise if you find a good distro for your needs, a stick with it, don’t change it, update and backup regularly.
Never trusted this setup to begin with because I didn’t trust Microsoft and I’m not all that capable or want to take time to sort this stuff out on a regular basis.
So I just setup my ThinkPad laptop with two removable SSDs and I just swap one or the other whenever I need. The drive is easily switched, from power down, remove drive, insert other drive and restart only takes about two minutes.
I’m not going to risk messing up my setup because two operating systems can’t work with one another.
Besides I seldom switch, I use Windows if I really have to about three or four times a year.
Exactly … If all you’re going to do is go online and maybe write a document once in a while … a simple distro like Mint or PopOS will just work without issue.
I think it’s just marketing and propaganda. The companies, corporations and political forces that want to drive the world wide internet conversations are spilling over and leaking into everything including Lemmy.
Lemmy.News has a whole group that is constantly pushing war rhetoric against Russia … lots of other groups are either right leaning or drifting to far right sentiments.
It’s the same thing that is happening in the real world. Everyone has an opinion and if we were all honest and showed it, the world overall is a fairly liberal, open and accepting civilization.
Unfortunately, the loudest voices are those with the most extreme views and more often than not, they have a lot of money and funding behind them because wealthy people are pushing an agenda.
It’s not that the world has become worse, is that the worst of us have become the loudest voices while the majority of us choose not to say anything.
Yeah that’s the best part of using these things in an emergency.
30 years ago I used to memorize about 20 seven digit phone numbers. I may have remembered one or two ten digit numbers for long distance calls but we live in northern Ontario and the entire area of our province is the size of France and has one area code.
Now I have a hard time recalling my wife’s number if I had to call anyone I know in a public pay phone. I have to stop and think to remember what my number is. I definitely wouldn’t be able to remember any of my close friends or family members.
Honestly in an emergency, I would have an easier time going to library to use a computer to contact someone on Facebook or Instagram
For 90% of the public that is not attached to a major business, corporation or institution … Libreoffice is more than enough.
And even for small offices and small groups or companies, LibreOffice is more than enough.
The only difference comes when you have to set up a mass system with hundreds or thousands or systems and people to interconnect an office system do the big companies opt for Microsoft office.
Then by the late Middle Ages we would have had the Holy Roman Pharmaceutical Corporation.
They would have conquered the New World … in their minds!!!
I’ve been on Linux for about 15 years now … I’m no pro and I’ve never really advanced in anything with the terminal
I tried doing stuff years ago but then I came at a crossroad … either spend my life learning the dark arts of the terminal and all the details of how every major system works … reinstall every time I have a new problem that I caused … or just leave everything alone and never tweak or adjust anything.
For the past few years, I just install the latest stable version of anything I use and never bother touching or tweaking anything … never had a problem since.
