Always found a bit weird the way gimp saves images. “Export” makes sense somehow but still feels weird, like if it didn’t want to hear about the thing you’ve created anymore ever.

Leaving someone with a misconception isn’t better. Sometimes people doesn’t know that they can search for something elsewhere and it isn’t bad to point it out in case they are interested in looking for alternatives.
I think you are referring to gnome more than debian. I’ve been trying debian with kde and so far I haven’t found that many problems.
But you are hoping for the best for someone else. Better wish them to be merry than just happy then?
