  • “buck” is a common slang for a US Dollar. Its also a male deer. These are both very common words in American English. The “buck” in Starbucks doesn’t use either of these meanings, and thats fine, in this case you’re right that that part of Starbucks doesn’t carry any meaning from English…HOWEVER neither does “star” in Starbucks. The modern Starbucks logo has no star shapes in it, and nothing referencing astronomical stars. Its equal to “bucks” in that it is just a set of sounds. Yet in Mandarin, the “star” is literally translated as “star” like the astronomical body and spoken it sounds close to “sheen”, while the “bucks” sounds close to “bahcoo” for a total pronounced word of “sheenbahcoo”. So literal for the first part, phonetic for the second part. Essentially using two completely different sets of rules inside one word.

  • Its taught me all languages are broken in some way. Romance languages have words that have arbitrary gender needing conjugation. Some have two genders, some three! Then the Romanian language comes in with its own tricks.

Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) lack an alphabet so words are conjunctions of smaller words, or sometimes worse the phonetics of smaller words without the meaning of the word.

Starbucks (the coffee company) in Mandarin is 星巴克. 星 is the literal translation of Star. So far so good. However 巴 can mean “to hope”. 克 can mean “to restrain”. The reason they use 巴克 for the second half of Starbucks is that when you pronounce them they vaguely sound like “bahcoo” (buck). So the first half is the traditional use of direct translation ignoring what it sounds like phonetically, but the second half ignores direct translation and instead uses the phonetics of the second two characters to sound like “buck”.

  • You could accomplish what you’re trying by putting the GPU in a second computer. Further, most UPSes have a data interface, so that you could have the GPU computer plugged into the UPS too, but receive the signal when power is out, so it can save its work and shutdown quickly preserving power in the UPS batteries. The only concern there would be the max current output of the UPS in the event of a power outage being able to power both computers for a short time.

  • Why do we hate commercials and advertisements?

In marketing principles, there are about 20 methods used in advertising, heres a good list and explanation of each:

    https://thevisualcommunicationguy.com/business-communication/advertising-appeals-overview/

Most of these are manipulative to the audience by creating a need where one didn’t exist, then providing the product to fill that need. Of these only three can be used ethically without manipulation:

    • Plain Appeal
    • Rational Appeal
    • Statistics Appeal

However even THESE can be misused and distorted in an effort to sell a product.

In short, nearly all modern advertising lacks honesty.

My answer is that we don’t like to be marketed to, especially from companies of which we don’t have a single ounce of interest of doing business with.

Those businesses would actually prefer not marketing to you either. There’s a saying in marketing “I know I’m wasting have my money on advertising. I just don’t know which half”. If you’re being marketed to for a product or service you’re not a candidate to consume, thats wasted money for the advertiser. This is one of the reasons that Facebook and Google are so valuable as advertising platforms. They have access to VERY DETAILED information on what does interest you, and advertisers desperately want to reach you with their appeals to their product or service.

Makes me wonder a lot of the time, why we aren’t attacking marketers and salespeople more often. I swear if we all focused on a week or a month by breaking the kneecaps of any salesperson or marketing agent while tormenting their families through harassment because of all of the years they’ve harassed us and fucked with us by relentless advertising.

Are you actually suggesting bodily violence against people working in advertising or sales?! That is wildly inappropriate if nothing else just based upon basic human rights most nations recognize as “free speech”, such as the USA Constitution’s 1st amendment.

  • Well, my mother has asked me to digitize her collection too and have me host it. Originally, fine, you give your movies to me, I host them, same thing.

Did your mom buy your computer and hard drives? I doubt it. You spent your own money, right? So she’s giving you a whole bunch of stuff which is consuming your space. Quote out the cost of buying components for a separate server for her with her own drives. When she buys the parts, build her her own server and put her stuff on it.

  • Then again, if washing machines did not exist, society would have to adjust it’s expectations.

Wouldn’t it simple revert to the class based system of cleanliness we had before?

    • the rich would still have clean clothes with intricate designs and patterns that would be laborious to clean, but they have staff that clean their clothes
    • the middle class would still have mostly clean cloths but would have much more simple to wash designs which are more durable, and a significant portion of household time would be spent on cleaning cloths
    • the poor wouldn’t have clean cloths
