  • Yeah. Modern phones are awesome if you need to use every feature to its fullest. I love that I have the opinions to access my accelerometer or GPS independently. Since I do a bit of CAD work, having a high quality camera is awesome for photogrammetry. But see, there is a caveat: It’s the right tool for me and worth my $1K to have an up-to-date device that has a reasonable bit of compute.

Otherwise, nah. I just got a resin 3D printer that only has a USB connector. No cloud, no wifi, no bullshit. It does its one job well and that is all I care about.

It sucks that most people are basically trained from birth that “more is better” or “brand new is better”. It took me years to de-program myself from that shit.

  • Folding phones are still a status symbol of some kind and the actual utility of a large phone screen is lost on most owners. Once most of the R&D cost is paid off and the tech starts to plateau, it might get cheaper?

I see foldable screens as a work device. Sure, a portable movie theater would be a good perk, but it would absolutely rock as a commercial all-in-one console for a 3D printer farm or something. If there is enough commercial value in a device like that, $2k could be a bargain.

  • I don’t hate on it and do not advocate for or against it. You do you. Boost is simply one of many options and other options may be free and ad-less.

Because of the nature of ad platforms and ad delivery, various metrics about your activity is also sent to third parties. It’s something to be aware of, at least.

I am saying that if an app is good enough, I’ll donate or buy it. For now, I am a top contributor to Connect. Yay? Personally, I think the ad route is trashy, but others don’t seem to mind unless they get blasted in the face by Troof Social.

  • Comment #2. So I played around a bit and got something muffled and a bit wobbly. It was basically mix of cropping out highs/mid-highs and adding various depth effects, mild hiss and some compression with actual water sounds that are playing super quiet. After all that mess, I EQ that again to get rid of any clipping or popping.

It’s still not perfect but might be on the right track. I am in a road trip at the moment but I just randomized a piano and started slapping fx together. The fx are completely blown out on my phone speakers, but decent enough with headphones.

Here is what I am working with so far. You can see the fx chain in the right side. EQ -> Luxverb for depth -> Basic delay and reverb -> EQ #2 -> flange for a bit of hiss. (Track 5 hits the limiter on Track 1 for a bit of water-like wobble.) The first EQ low pass is purposely high. It creates a bit of distortion that kinda works.
