Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you tell to your friend that AI has, with no doubt, lowered his skill?
2·8 days agoI don’t know how to write bash scripts. But I used AI to generate a Bash script to rename some GoPro files a certain way, thinking that they would still be usable in the gopro, but with more descriptive file names, and I spent a long time learning about its output and how it had written in a lot of really good features into the Bash script, which took about half an hour that I was sort of learning. But then it turns out that renaming the files didn’t do what I thought it would do, so overall it was a waste of time.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I highly recommend journalctl-desktop-notificationEnglish
4·12 days agoHoly shit, this is amazing. Thank you so, so much for sharing this. I had not heard of it, and I am often stymied by journal CTL, since I don’t really know how it works. So I will most definitely be using this on my desktop and possibly on my self-hosted stuff as well. Thank you again.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•are there any resources to learn how Windows internal/kernel works?
3·15 days agoThere’s an open source is called ReactOS you might like to investigate
(Read the room, dude!)
How much did you pay?
I’m running raspberry pi is on mine but that is just to get pi soexific features.
I would not recommend libreelec because Firefox is still the most reliable way to watch yt without ads.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Tutorial series for self hosting beginners?English
3·18 days agoI am saving this thread to try and find a good tutorial for myself. That said, I have had a great experience on #networking on libera.chat, which is IRC. They have been very patient with me and often willing to go into detail in a beginner-friendly way.
Unfortunately, they are not accessible via the web chat, so you have to use an IRC client and register and account, which is relatively painless, but might take 10 to 15 minutes to get started.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what open source messaging app do YOU use?
6·18 days agoSpecifically open source?
I will use IRC until my last dying breath, both libera.chat for public chats and one on a tildes server for a smaller community of computer weirdos (weird in the best way possible).
I use matrix for things like Ubuntu Studio community chat which have given up on IRC because it’s “not popular” or whatever ;) I used to strongly dislike matrix, but now that I’ve put the recovery key in my password manager, I only mildly dislike it.
For non-open source, I’m still on Google messages (gross) for RCS/MMS/SMS, Signal for cool people and my therapist (I guess shes cool too—the only person I’ve successfully brought to signal), Bluebubbles for my family who all have iDevices, Discord for work social chat, Slack for the one makerspace who uses it, and email…
Things I’ve successfully distanced from after using a lot:
- WhatsApp. This is a challenge because a lot of cool group chats in my IRL community are here.
- FB messenger. I still have friends on Facebook. Or I should say, people I’ve lost touch with are still on Facebook.
- IG: I log into this account once every 6mo or so to contact people that I only have on here.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an album with a completely unique sound
2·19 days agoIdk about spotify, but m v b has some poppy tunes, some experimental tunes, and def goes on a little journey. Kevin Shields talked about how part of it was music he had shelved after loveless and dusted off and got out the door. There are two or three tracks that stand out to me, but it is definitely worth a listen!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an album with a completely unique sound
2·19 days agoSo happy they finally made
m b vthough. It was an amazing coda to their masterpiece which gave some much appreciated closure and cemented loveless’s place as the gem of their collection.I saw an interview with them about how once they figured out how to play that way, time started to pass differently, and it was a healing experience for them.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Bad experience on selfhosting nextcloudEnglish
2·21 days agoI started off with nextcloud on bare metal on my Raspberry Pi and there was a lot that I could never configure quite right on the server side of things. Stuff like getting the right memory usage dialed in for the web server. I moved to NextCloudPi and it solved a lot of those problems for me. But it looks like the maintainer is not wanting to maintain it forever.
Someday, I will migrate to nextcloud AIO, but I’m not looking forward to the migration.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there anything you'd like to know about stationary engineering and power plant operations?
1·21 days agoThanks for the detailed answer. Coming back up slow and steady seems like the right thing and it makes sense that each piece of equipment would have its own procedures for coming back up.
I was reading somewhere about a grid failure in the midwest and how it was really difficult to bring the whole grid up from cold and they had a special kind of power plant that basically, I can’t remember the details, but it was a very, very small power plant which did the initial start and everything else kind of came back up from that one.

Anyone can try it out! https://libera.chat/guides/webchat
