  • Idk why I said Kmart Reddit, was really trying to inspire a laugh, and to encourage seeking professional help for stuff like this (because, i read this like OP had a specific instance that happened and upset them)

a therapist will have far greater tools and knowledge than Lemmy will probably be able to provide, and Lemmy may even provide harmful advice while we’re at it.

Was just supposed to be a “chuckle, yeah this probably isn’t the best place to ask for psychiatric reassurance while I’m fucking annoyed” inspiring comment but I see at least some were offended by the Kmart Reddit comment which is fair because it’s downplaying the power of lemmy and giving more back to Reddit. I’ll edit the post to be less rude

  • You’ve come to lemmy to ask a bunch of arm chairs their opinion on actual psychological research and discussion while you’re clearly (to me) upset about something that had actually happened

Therapists will be a far greater resource and I highly recommend you give them a shot if you frequently are finding yourself stuck in “ruts” or extreme emotion. The advice given here (just like Reddit) has no credential, insurance, or laws to prevent anyone from giving you bad advice (and it might not even seem bad at first.)

May none of you forget that AI and quick calculations are very very easy now and pretty powerful. I could see some trolls coming into posts like these with weaponized GPT results to try and get you twisted.

Internet is fine for fun, but for really serious shit, I try to stick with reality. We’re very shortly entering an era where things start to progress faster than ever before - so much so that I question whether or not testing/safety protocols will be able to keep up and the content on the internet will become more dangerous

  • Well no, I can’t. That’s because that snippet was in reference to non-reproducible things, like history really. Science is Queen of objectivity in that you can take the exact same steps and physics ensures that things happen again in the same way

With history, it’s about interactions between complex, ever-changing human psychologies. It’s about decisions made that might not necessarily be restricted to laws like physics, but maybe what you had for breakfast that day, or what your first interaction with another human was like.

Now technically, maybe one day in the future we could use physics and insane measurements of humans to predict behavior and what not like we can with say a chemical reaction, but that’s pretty far out and I’m not sure we’d want to do that (despot being driven to do it anyway because someone else will and they’ll use it for harm)

  • I’m admittedly a little confused on how you might still think this. Could you explain your train of thought for how I think that (what’s the bridge between the two quotes you’re using?)

To be clear, objective fact is obtainable by reproducibility (scientific process namely) but that doesn’t really work as well for “objective fact” regarding previous events when you expand them past “this event happened” (I.e. this happened because xyz)

I think a lot of people blur the line between the event itself and the rationale/explanation behind it. That’s really the crux of the problem as I see it and am trying to bring awareness to.
