So I just had a mod out a harassment report I had made to the very people that have been harassing me, connect it with my username, and be dismissively mocking about it.

This is absolutely the kind of reddit behavior I left there to avoid.

Of course all of you will tell me “But itsn’t against any rules”, and I counter: It creates a hostile environment which is explicitly against the rules.

I’ve searched and scoured and the only thing I’ve found is to post to this community. That feels strange as this isn’t a technical issue.

Is there anything to be done about this or do I just leave Lemmy too?

Fuck “it isn’t against the rules” bullshit. I’ve been a mod on various forums for decades and most rule sets are made up by 1, 2 if you’re lucky, people just sitting around attempting to create their ideal community without looking at any other rules. They then think it’s some moral imperative to give endless slack to people who don’t explicitly break their rules. FUCK THAT NOISE.

Disruptive assholes love rules. They really love prescriptive rules. When you know the exact boundaries, you can cruise along them with impunity.

If you’re an asshole or disruptive you’re banned. Call me a power tripping mod or janny or whatever you want. I will never prioritize one bad faith asshole over the rest of the community that has trusted me to create a space for them that is in line with their values.

The communities i moderate love the way I do things. I’m not a saint, I can even be a little petty. But fuck you if you come into our home and wipe your dirty ass boots on our dinner table. None of us want to deal with your bullshit.

    it creates a hostile environment

That’s literally the only metric that matters as a mod 95% of the time. Anyone who thinks otherwise is bad mod. Gauntlet thrown down, I’ll die on that hill.

I’ve been on the internet since before it had pictures and the ratio of good to bad mods and admins as far as fairness and justice goes, I can count the number of ‘good’ mods I’ve dealt with on the hand of a clumsy woodshop teacher.

Honestly my theory has been it’s because a lot of mods/mod teams try to reinvent the wheel more or less and there is a huge burnout rate. Most mods are not very experienced and don’t last long. Then the ones that do stick around are either smart enough to not take on more communities or become totally power tripping jannies and run tons of them.

I think its more that positions of power attract power abusers. I absolutely do NOT think that ‘mods turn shitty due to burnout’, most power abuser mods are shitty people before they attain the power, and actively seek the power to expand their ability to be shitty to others.

Without rigorous vetting, these slots will always be filled by the most eager sociopaths, and seeing as anyone can be a mod by making a community, there is literally zero vetting at all.

ALL of the admin interventions happen after a mod exposes their shitty behavior, and we know that sociopaths are ridiculously skilled at making themselves seem the victim when they are actually the aggressor.

Actual good mods see this and are disheartened, because what’s the point of working hard to support a community when their mod peers destroy their work with their sociopathy.

I didn’t say they turn shitty due to burnout. The ones who burnout leave. Shitty ones are a problem I fully acknowledged. Reread what I wrote.

You’ll hear 2 different things here, and I’m not sure which bucket you fall into.

    1. You’ve honestly been harassed by a mod, and that sucks. There’s at least one mod I know on one instance that I had to actively block because they were such a tool. If it’s Lemmy.World, this is the right place, if you go into the instance info you can also ping the admins directly. You may want to collect some info first like your interactions just so they have the ammunition they need to take action. You can also switch instances if you like, you’re still beholden to mods on the offending instance, but it’s an option to at least not be on the same instance.

    2. You are the harasser. If this is the case, then yes mods are more strict here, and personally I have liked it. Reddit was very tolerant of trolls in my experience, and here it is less so. So, if you’re being a jerk, then expect mods to ban you.

I have no idea which one you fall into, but I hope it clears it up a bit.

      1. Yes it is a lemmy.world instance

      2. This is always the claim harassers make, crybullies every one knowing right were to stand to be seen as within the bounds but actively pushing every button they can find to force others out. Always. I have seen this behavior in children of every age from 7 to 87 and it is always the same, and always treated the same by authority. It’s why school bullies love zero tolerance policies. I could go on a lot longer but every word I have to write to you sends me into teeth-grinding frustration because I know exactly the fuck kind of person you are on that above social transaction play.

A few weeks ago I asked a question.

“What checks and balances are in place to make mods HERE not abuse their power?”

The answer I got was “if you don’t like a mod, you can create your own community and mod it yourself”.

Which to me is a very bad solution. It’s essentially just saying “my way or the highway”.

And then I’m told to make the new community on the fediverse. But why would I want to? Essentially you’re saying this platform is just like reddit…so if I’m going to migrate, why would I stay with the same userbase thats small? Why not just go back to reddit? Sure it doesn’t solve the issue of power mods, but at least my new subreddit would have more users.

        1. OP’s modlog speaks for itself - e.g. “eat my ass”, “go get a therapist”, the word “asshole” is used several times, etc. These are direct rule violations - OP can do whatever they wish, but so too can the mods, and without rules, society crumbles to the ground.

        2. Btw, OP has banned many, Many, MANY people themselves, which is quite a large list for a 14 day old account? Also note this list is only the bans, but there are other types of actions too like removing individual comments. So OP is quite happy to allow bans, so long as it happens in the direction that they favor.

        3. Mods abuse their power - it’s the nature of the game. That’s not what’s happening here, but in general it does happen. But… what else is there? If everyone has the total freedom to say whatever, whenever, however they want, then what happens to MY freedom to not have to read that crap? 4chan and Truth Social already exist, as too does Twitter/X - but why can’t we have a place to have civil discussions about matters of importance to people of intelligence? (Who yes, just so happen to enjoy Star Trek and installing Linux on our machines btw:-P)

You can’t expect to just walk into someone else’s home and have the total freedom to do what you will, and also somehow prevent anyone else from reacting to your actions - but at the same time preserving your rights to do those same types of actions (including full-on banning) in the reverse direction. Which you don’t seem to be advocating for, but OP is. Anyway, if you want total freedom, make your own space, and you can have that. Seriously. But these spaces are already spoken for.

To OP I would say: if you want to go back to 4chan, Truth Social, Twitter/X, or Reddit, then that is your right to do so. But violating the rules here is not allowed. We like things orderly and tidy and we would leave here ourselves if it ever devolved to become like those others. Btw you probably want to block me too, bc it seems like you won’t enjoy what I have to say often.

Nobody’s perfect, but the nature of intolerance is that it is a cancer feeding upon the host - OP is intolerant to the rules, but is shocked, shocked I say, to find out that the rules still apply to them.

Ironically OP is the one with the power there - to walk away, to comply, to start something new, etc. but despite having all of those options, pines for the one thing they cannot have: control over other people (hence the claim that nobody should have control over other people, conveniently ignoring all the times that OP has already done just that).

Pretty much the only thing that the Fediverse absolutely needs is the ability to have peaceful or at least civil conversations, so that is not a thing that we can give up, or the Fediverse will go the way of those other better-not-to-be-named sites.

Yep, and baselessly attacked people in a forum I am in, including me. He had several comments removed for false accusations there (https://lemmy.world/modlog/1252), then came to this community and said how mad he was about that sub, and then said something really horrible about the mods there.

Guy is legit angry at the world, and he gets even angrier when he doesn’t get his way.

Wtf you have downvote bots or people brigading - social media sucks ass so much sometimes.:-( I really wish those were not anonymous so you could see who is abusing the system like that.

            But… oh no, anyway meme:-P.

Yeah the guy is allowed to be angry though we don’t need to be abused by having to bear the brunt of it all the time. It’s toxicity which they will not control, thus making everyone’s day a little shittier as a result.

I don’t. It’s a hypothetical. But also meant to be asked about Lemmy as a whole. I’m asking more on a philosophical level, and less of a personal experience level.

It creates a hostile environment which is explicitly against the rules.

Agreed! It’s very annoying when people create a hostile environment, like falsely accusing people of being forum sliders, Russian plants, going and following them around in every post just to downvote every post, not supporting their rights to vote for whoever they want, etc.

Let’s hope that Lemmy doesn’t get as toxic as Reddit with that BS!
