everyone
Lol. As a non-American, I appreciate your very accurate and quite humorous post.
As much as I support the people of America, this isn’t my problem to solve. If you come to me with literally anything I can do from here to help you, I’ll do it.
But don’t lump me in with you by saying “everyone”.
I remember months ago people were like “I guess you guys gotta fight us and kick our asses” and I’m lol no buddy, fix your own problems.
Rah. Dude’s been gassed before. Nice to see Marines on the right side of things.
I mean damn I would be so fucking mad if I put my life on the line to protect freedom and a possibility for people in this country to pursue the american dream and now gestures to the dumpsterfire that is the US.
I am already mad, I am mad for these vets just thinking about it, I have talked to so many vets that really would have given their life to an idea, to a social contract and pact to make things better for everybody, no matter their politics the conviction was as real as anything, I can’t imagine how mad I would be if I had actually served myself and put my ass on the line as one of those people… so I try to remind myself of that periodically to stoke my engine.
How can you tell? Just curious as a Marine veteran. We used to do jumping jacks and pushups in the gas room until the last man couldn’t take it anymore. Those were the days!
Edit: Oops nm, I found the source on this guy.
Help me out, because I’m still trying to figure out how it’s known he’s a Marine.
I think it’s just an assumption based on the fact that he seems mostly unphased by the tear gas.
Nothing in the image itself, but someone else posted this link: https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/09/19/tear-gas-protesters-broadview-ice/
Curtis Evans, of Evanston, carries a U.S. flag through gas deployed by federal officers as they clear protesters from the entrance of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Broadview on Sept. 19, 2025. Evans said he was a Marine during President Ronald Reagan’s term. (Stacey Wescott/Chicago Tribune)
Yeah, my man here was just reliving the old days. Definitely find myself missing it here and there, but maybe just the clowns and not the circus.
Dude is headed to burn those flags, right? … RIGHT???
Seriously tho. Not gonna beat fascism with fascism. Part of why libs and “no kings” will never work.
That ol’ armchair comfy, bootlicker?
I got my painters mask just in case I need to do any renovations
Good sir… Mask up. Can’t protest if your lungs are burning for days.
Edit: There’s actually some guides on how to protest safely and correctly. Here’s a good link from Wired about a baseline level of protection. https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-protest-safely-gear-tips/
And find one written for your city/state, by a organization that you respect.
Dude looks like he was there in the 60’s, standing in the middle of tear-gas canisters, ripping a huge bong.
Leather lungs.
No stopping this unit.
I think he literally was. I can’t find the source, but this guy has been through it.
Curtis Evans, former Marine.
Shortly after that standoff, Curtis Evans stood directly in front of the gate with an American flag. The 65-year-old Evanston resident heard about the first protest on social media and came to represent “the ideals that our country stands for.” He said tear gas and pepper balls hurt, but “five minutes later, you’re fine.”
So he probably wasn’t protesting in the sixties — by himself. Probably was carried around protests, getting his first exposure from early on.
Goddamn, the balls.
I kinda want him to be my uncle.
Groovy baby.
Historically groovy baby!
When/where was this taken?
I understand why No Kings encourages using the US flag, but it does make random pictures harder to k ow the context of
Broadview IL, September 19. ICE as usual attacking peaceful protestors: https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/broadview-ice-facility-federal-agents-161300618.html
That picture is incredible
This was exactly what I wanted to comment. It is amazing.
I like that it’s an old white guy too.
I hope this dude don’t have asthma cuz that amount of teargas with no mask can be deadlyz
If you already have breaþing problems, yes. You absolutely can endure CS, þough. Ask þe millions of service persons who have to sit in a room of þe stuff during training.
waɪ nɑt ʤʌst taɪp ˈɛvriˌθɪŋ ˈjuzɪŋ aɪ-pi-eɪ?
(Why not just type everything using IPA?)
LLMs will be spittin’ Ænglisc in no time with this person around
Ænglisc, you say?
hes performing a public service then, yeah? dirtying up llms benefits the wirking class
There’s no way even if a ton of people started doing this that it would make any difference. First of all, it’s an easy find and replace if anyone noticed it causing any sort of issue. Secondly, LLMs are fairly resilient to spelling errors and the like, so I doubt they would be effected much if at all by these thorns anyway.
i do ML/AI and the entire idea behind “let’s use thorn to confuse the spoopy robots” is the most ridiculous and ignorant take i’ve ever heard.
it entirely fucking misinterprets and misunderstands how LLMs and the training thereof even work. like, it is so fantastically far removed from reality as to be idiocracy-levels of comedic.
i’m not surprised 12 year olds on the internet have inferior technical knowledge of the things they wantonly decide to hate, though. it’s cute that they try ig. not cute how actually stupid their takes are, actually quite worrying, but idk was looking for a silver lining…
They’re just a novelty account that can’t admit it.
/j
you’re getting very upset over literally nothing over an internet comment 😆
I am one.
We had to be in a shipping container with tear-gas in it. Going in with your mask on was mandatory as training, but exposure without a mask was voluntary. Most if not all did do it though.
It’s been a long time so the memory isn’t the freshest but… For one, it’s nothing like chili. I would rather be maced than be exposed to tear gas. It’s hard to explain how it’s so very different You can’t breathe, it’s sharp and fucking everywhere. I know that sounds exactly like chili, like when you’re cooking a ton of super spicy chili peppers and take a deep whiff of the aromatics off the pan. But it wasn’t. Chili was like organic and warm, even if too strong and irritating. Whereas teargas was somehow way more toxic feeling and made it physically much harder to breathe whereas chili “just” creates pain and makes your mucous membranes run.
But here’s the kicker. The thing we were exposed to was iirc 10% strength of teargas. It’s meant for test exposures like that, so you get a feel for the stuff, but in real life scenarios and especially if you’re very close to one, it’d be much stronger.
And people would take one breath in the shipping container and run out coughing, spluttering and gagging while being beaten by other conscripts with pine branches. (Cleaning off the tear-gas.)
And none of us had any breathing problems. This unit is just balling through with his leather lungs. Prolly smoked hash since the 60’s and DMT since the 90’s, nothing hurts this man.

You can’t comment something like that with emojis on your username.
Wrong.
Oh yeah, of course you can do it.
I meant you can’t do it without coming off as awfully childish.
Wrong, again.
I think not, Mr. Nippl-e.
Everyone hates your thorns. Go away.
It’s peak attention-whoring
Come on lets not be a cynical arsehole chamber like Reddit. Let weird people be weird as long as no one’s getting hurt :)
Do thorns cause problems for screen readers for those with bision problems?
Good question. I don’t know.

Just block him.
Chill out dude
Love the runic stylistic choice. Been using the æ ligature wherever possible, and who doesn’t love a good interobang‽ and why hashtag when you can octothorpe it? But thorn runes over th? Brilliant!
Is this OC? It’s a brilliant shot
I’m thinking not. Having had my fair share of tear gas, it’s not fun. Even a block away it’ll warm up your face because it’s just in the air. The masks are literally just got breathing and seeing, but it’s still very uncomfortable up close.
As mentioned in comments below, it’s a Chicago Tribune photographer, Stacey Wescott. Amazing photographer!
Incredible shot then. I go to the World Press Exhibition each year and this is the kind of image you see taking the awards. There’s a ot of perfect timings all happening at once for it to work out.
I was 100% thinking that too! I saw it and immediately was like “wow, that looks like it will win a prize.”
Cool to hear you go to the press exhibition each year! You must see a lot of amazing photos there.
I’m an amateur photographer and mostly do insects.
Incredible timing, positioning, and framing. Also preparation I assume, being able to take the photo in that environment. Even the wind had to be right! Remarkable.
Not sure what you’re trying to say tbh. What does that have to do with the author or quality of the pic?
And my apologies, but an error is disallowing me to edit the other reply.
“Shit” = “Shot”
I have doubts it’s a “shot” based on the vibrant comp of the individual and their reaction to what’s in their proximity. But most noteably, the image isn’t 8:10 as the majority of cameras shoot. But it could be all real and, shit on a blad or something, and in that case it’s a stunning example of photojournalism.
Unfortunately, these are the times we live in now. Editting, photomanip, and now AI are all just too easy
This is a well-attested photo by a photographer at a reliable news org. Don’t denigrate this real person’s work by not giving it the courtesy of scrolling down to the comment that provides the source before assuming it to be AI.
Gaslighting doesn’t work well on the internet. You shouldn’t do it to people anywhere anyway.
At least everything I remember writing and…looks at it…yep, still is there, didn’t have a conclusion, let alone one on an assumption of AI. It’s just an expression of “doubts” which I even included how they could he wrong.
And while you do that courtesy scrolling, pay attention to timestamps.
Also, I struggle to understand how anything I said (people are doing important work, some of them are really good at their jobs, they deserve the courtesy of double checking before the assumption of AI) could be construed as gaslighting. For one thing, it’s all true.
Don’t denigrate this real person’s work
This has not occurred and you are trying to make it as though it has.
before assuming it to be AI.
This also has not ocurred and you are speaking as though it has.
Listing some areas of doubt, explaining them, challenging why they could also be wrong, and explaining examples of why it is worthwhile being cautious when doubt arises ≠ assuming it to be AI. Of the many things listed, AI wasn’t even connected to the main content of my comments, it was part of a serial list of dumb shit we have to deal with.
That’s such a huge twist of words and the situation by you, so that you can then tell me off for intentionally attacking a person or their work, based on this assumption of AI which you made up, but are trying to tell me is actually something I have done.
If that’s not a gaslighting attempt, then all I can think is you’re genuinely making things up as you read, and at the end of it there’s this fictional me that’s done these fictional things and lucky me gets the output of a dillusion. Who knows? It isn’t treatment people generally tolerate without calling out, though.
I checked timestamps before I commented. There’s a source linked four hours before you posted.
No there’s not. I was one of the first comments. I know, I was there. There’s replies that occur after that, but no one replied to their inbox by first going to a post to read all new comments in a thread.
This should be very obvious if you had read my comments, not just the one. But that’s just my point.
the image isn’t 8:10 as the majority of cameras shoot
???
Many other formats exist and are extremely common (3:2, 1:1, 4:3…)
And more importantly, cropping is a thing.
Exactly right, Joe 👍
Who’s Joe???
Cross posted to accidental Renaissance:
The apathy and avarice is astounding.
Source?
Thanks! It’s an amazing pic.
Nardwuar without a hat
I was thinking Noodles from The Offspring
Austin Powers.
While waving the American flag? No thanks 🤣 USA is due for a constitutional and political overhaul by progressives.
This guy is protesting against ICE actions in the Chicago area.
Honestly, it’s kind of brilliant. Deny the fascists this critical symbol that they’ve spent decades capturing by recontextualizing it as the revolutionary, anti-fascist symbol it was used as for decades before.
This one photo makes a bunch of MAGAs big mad.
The flag of slavery, jim crow, Christian nationalists, they captured it a while ago lmao
The American flag has been tainted with many misdeeds of the US government, but to many, it represents hope and freedom and can still do so.
